2. I murdered my own lawn 25+ years ago

Lawns in the desert! I couldn't see paying over a hundred bucks a month for water for the pleasure or mowing the damned thing in triple digit heat.

Anything is better than lawn grass unless maybe you live in northwestern Europe. The shit works there.

3. I murdered a big one...

While I was in college. It turned out really nice and is still being managed by the current owner. It was a kind of trashy yard that needed cleaning up. But I have never owned a mower and rarely agree to use one. I mowed that place twice and after that, I notified my landlord that it wasn't going to be a lawn anymore. He didn't protest and actually thanked me when it was clear what I had done and how it all worked. I turned a trashy yard into an outdoor reading room with shaded patios and flowers everywhere. I encouraged as much native stuff as I could. There were heirloom shrubs so I revived those.

Anyway, there should be some kind of incentive to forego the stupid and costly lawn.
