Exclusive poll: Nikki Haley surges, nearly ties Ron DeSantis as the alternative to Trump

Former UN ambassador Nikki Haley has surged nationally in a new USA TODAY/Suffolk University Poll, challenging a faltering Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as the top alternative to Donald Trump for the GOP presidential nomination.

Haley's support has risen to 11% of registered voters who plan to vote in GOP primaries or caucuses, up from 4% in the USA TODAY/Suffolk poll taken in June and just one percentage point below DeSantis. His 12% standing was a steep fall from his 23% support four months ago.

Trump continues to dominate the field, backed by 58%, up 10 points.

The survey of 309 Republican and Republican-leaning voters, taken Tuesday through Friday by landline and cell phone, has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.6 percentage points.

Haley is not surging. Nobody is. The Republican Party is stuck with the crazy narcissistic criminal they created. It looks like no "reasonable" candidate can win the Republican primary.

MAGA is a cult. If Trump isn’t running as a Republican, they would probably either not vote or melt down in some way.

However, it’s absolutely going to be Trump as the nominee. He’s at like 60-something percent.

die-hard MAGATs might hesitate to vote for him. Haley could gain quite a bit of support. She has the same right-wing politics as other Republicans, but she’s better at masking her views to sound more reasonable. For example, she said a nationwide abortion ban would be off the table if she is elected because Republicans, even with a Senate majority, would not have the 2/3rds vote to pass it. But all they would have to do is jettison the filibuster and vote it into law with a simple majority. Her tactics seem to be to offend as few as possible while disguising her true intentions, whatever they are, so Republican-leaning independents might support her.

It's why none of them will criticize Trump even though he's 40 points ahead. They want to swoop in and snatch the MAGA support after the "witch hunt" takes him down. If they attack him now, Trump will trash them and drag them through the mud and they'll never get the deplorables.

This was my Governor for 6 years. She is the icon of pragmatic unrestrained ambition. There’s a reason she was called Tricky Nikki.

(and yes, I do have spineless Lindsey, clueless Tim Scott and “you lie!” Wilson as my Congressional delegation. 🤢

With a toxic soup of representation like that your mental stability must be rock solid. I would have fled in terror years ago.

I don't like her much, but I find her to be much more palatable than Trump or Desantis. Trump is a fascist maniac clown. At least Haley does not strike me as entirely crazy. Hopefully Joe will beat whoever it is in 2024.

We made parody videos about DeSantis and Pence, but Haley is even more boring than they are. It seems like imaking a funny video about her would be a waste of time and energy.
