They soo love bi-partisanship, but only when it means that Democrats surrender power to the Republicans. When it's the other way, they go silent.
All that's needed is for 10 or so Republicans to work with the Dems and elect a speaker.

(920 posts)I would like to hear from Democratic Members of the House on this. What does someone like Raskin say about this? Jefferies could become Speaker, and that would save the country from MAGA idiots. Not every Republican likes Trump. Some of them secretly hate him, but they can't come out in public about this because MAGA crazies will come after then and primary them. Look at Liz Cheney. She is a conservative Republican, but because she is against setting the Constitution on fire she lost her seat in the House. We just need a handful of Republicans who have had enough of the Trump MAGA idiots. There must be some out there.

(8,632 posts)a meaningful follow-up. They pretend to be neutral observers of fact and events but they are really only in it for the money and fame. They avoid at all cost presenting ideas and questions which require the audience to think through a situation.
For them to frame such an idea and present it would go against the whole argument that GOP conservatives, and MAGA especially, are a naturally occurring feature of our political and social culture. It would have to propose there was indeed a greater good which our government owes the nation and the world.
Instead they prefer to show American politics as a he said/she said conflict of opinions with the unsaid proviso that this is the naturally occurring outcome of a pluralistic society.
Mark Twain was right... If you don't read the newspaper, you're uninformed. If you read the newspaper, you're mis-informed.

(5,633 posts)Some group of Republicans and some group of Democrats will probably get together to elect a speaker if it looks like the government shuts down on Nov 17th.
It probably won't be Jeffries though, it'll be some centrist, and that person will have to assure both sides about what they're going do in specific circumstances. Like closing down the impeachment inquiry, making sure to fund Ukraine, continuing to fund the government, etc.
