Kevin McCarthy is floating a plan that would make him House speaker once again, but this time around he would be accompanied by Trump ally Jim Jordan as assistant speaker, NBC reports.
McCarthy was removed from the position by eight hardline Republicans including Matt Gaetz, after which McCarthy threw his support behind Jordan's speaker bid. Jordan, however, was unable to achieve the number of votes needed to get the gavel. Then, several other Republicans similarly failed to get the votes.
Now, there is a new plan under which the two would join forces, according to NBC.

"Asked why the idea which lacks key details, like how it would be enacted and whether it could even gain enough traction to happen was being floated now, a GOP lawmaker replied: 'Were desperate," NBC reported. "While the idea might seem far-fetched and it has not been pitched broadly within the GOP Conference, it is being discussed among some Republicans after Emmer, the third GOP nominee, dropped his bid. A source briefed on the idea likened it to the Speaker Nancy Pelosi/Assistant Speaker Katherine Clark arrangement that the Democrats had."

and dilute the power of the Speaker. Isnt that what got him kicked out in the first place?

(33,424 posts)No one should accept an arrangement which lowers the power of the Speaker.

(10,943 posts)... having Jim as an asst. make Kevin more attractive? Weird... they're both Trump kissers, so how does that help? Maybe they should call Nancy Pelosi and ask her how it's done.

(17,428 posts)For decades, Democrats have elected an Assistant Speaker from their caucus. They are #4 in the "caucus" leadership and served as a "whip" to help whip votes.
The Retrumplicants are trying to create some kind of "co-speakership". They are trying to use the fact that Dems have called their #4 in House leadership "assistant speaker" for decades to try to argue; "see, we're just doing what the Dems do".
It's bullshit, and it's twisting language to try to shoehorn their shitshow into something normal.
Anyone think that Speaker Pelosi ever had to get approval from Congresswoman Clark?
Anyone think McCarthy wouldn't have get approval from Gym?
What McCarthy is suggesting in no way is similar to Clark being elected by her caucus as "assistant speaker".
In the Navy we had a supply guy called "Jack of the Dust". His name wasn't Jack, and he didn't rule the dust.

(33,424 posts)Neither you nor I know what type of arrangement Pelosi had with Clark. Or what a R plan would be.

(17,428 posts)for the better part of 2 decades now, "you don't know what a Retrumplicant plan would be"?
Maybe stop "speculating" about Retrumplicants. It just serves to "normalize" them.

(19,381 posts)get some of those Rs who voted to ditch McCarthy to accept Kevin back. They need to get something to change their vote vis-a-vis Kevin. But he needs to get half of those rogues, without losing a single other R (who may, for example, object to empowering/enabling Jordan further even if not the Speaker).
I doubt McCarthy actually tested this proposal out in private with the relevant people before floating it publicly -- which would be really dumb if so. The Rs who voted to oust Kevin and the Rs who voted against Jordan as Speaker ads up to about 30 people. That's who he would need to make this deal with (getting all but 4 to agree).
