Richard Roundtree, "Shaft" actor, dies at age 81

Richard Roundtree, the actor best known for portraying detective John Shaft in the 1971 film "Shaft," has died, his representative told CBS News. He was 81.

Roundtree died Tuesday at his home in Los Angeles following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer, his representative, Patrick McMinn, said.

Roundtree's career in film and television spanned more than 50 years, including his appearance in five "Shaft" movies and a notable role as Sam Bennett in the iconic 1977 TV miniseries "Roots."

We were among the very few white people in the theater but we had such a good time and the movie was really out there for 1971 with so much animation from the audience. Grew up in Miami so we were used to be in diverse company..he’s Cuban and I’m a fair hair and not too tall. Ahhh..the good old days.

(Back in the day, the Seventies) they were welcomed, because they really just wanted to have fun, and we did. It wasn't until everyone started getting older that it became an issue...

That brings back memories. I never followed the Shaft movies, but the Isaac Hayes theme song was unforgettable. RIP Richard Roundtree.
