LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — A U.S. Army reservist suspected of killing at least 18 people in Maine had been taken by police for an evaluation after military officials became concerned that he was acting erratically in mid-July, a U.S. official told The Associated Press.

The official said commanders in the Army Reserve’s 3rd Battalion, 304th Infantry Regiment became concerned in mid-July that Robert Card was acting erratically while the unit was training at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in New York.

The official said military commanders became concerned about Card’s safety and asked for the police to be called. New York state police took Card to the Keller Army Community Hospital at West Point for evaluation, the official said.

The official was not authorized to publicly discuss information about the incident and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

The only recourse that I see in practice is a restraining order, in domestic violence cases, perhaps in some others, and those are too often ignored.

The Constitution’s preamble, hence purpose, incudes “ establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility” . at the very least, loose interpretation of the 2nd amendment contradicts the preamble, and justice applies only to certain people, not all.

We need to do better.

I've never heard any voices in my head telling me to buy guns like that.

The same is true of most people, mentally ill or not. They can't be bothered with the responsibilities of owning a gun.

My dad, father-in-law, and grandfather served in the military. They did not bring their wars home with them. On a most basic level they served so nobody else would have to deal with that shit.

I suspect my grandfather, in World War II, did some really bad shit he wasn't proud of, playing some small part in the incineration of entire cities in Germany and Japan. He never talked about it. He was later an engineer for the Apollo project. Bits of his metal brought men to the moon and back. He'd always talk about that.

I'm competent with guns. I've hunted, I've eaten animals I've killed.

Here in the twenty first century I've chosen "no guns." I'm not even that much enthusiastic about fishing except as social time with my carnivorous relatives.

I fired some pretty big guns. An M1 tank has three machine guns. I've fired all of them, many times. Each tank was assigned an M-16 rifle, which I fired many times. And each tanker had his own sidearm. Either a Colt M-1991 pistol, or a Beretta 9mm. I fired them both many times.

I haven't shot a firearm since I got out of the Army thirty years ago. I don't own any firearms. I must live on a different planet from those losers who need an assault rifle in order to get a sandwich from Subway.

As you may imagine, I have nothing but contempt for those cockwombles who do the camo clothing, tactical-gear, assault rifle cosplay. Their refusal to grow up is putting children at risk of not getting to grow up.
