(42,033 posts)I will say the quiet part out loud and just say that this man is a weirdo. His days as Speaker will be short lived because he is an intolerant hater and even republicans will want to get him off the national stage.

(4,002 posts)It's like Mike Pence and Michelle Bachman decided to have a child... and got child rearing advice from Pat Robertson. Then they homeschooled him using PragerU curriculum. He was never allowed to date or leave the house growing up except for church. They taught him women are incubators and should be subservient toward men.
A possibility? Who knows....
Note this is sarcasm

(96,043 posts)It's pretty clear there ought to be some religious test for holding office in a Democracy: it is quite clear adherents of some denominations ought not be allowed even near a voting booth, let alone government office....

The Magistrate
(96,043 posts)I seldom say things I do not mean, and on occasions when I do, I am concerned that they be taken as expression of my actual views. I see no point in unconvincing dishonesty.
Religious views have an unfortunate tendency to overlap with delusional belief. It is one thing for a person to be gripped by delusion and act accordingly in their life. It is quite another for a person gripped by delusion to hold government office in which their delusions can be inflicted on the populace at large as matters of policy and law.
You will doubtless start with 'who decides?', and while that is a reasonable objection to any particular line drawn, it does not address the problem of allowing into positions of authority people whose grasp of reality is so shaky as to be able to say, on the basis of religious belief, the sort of nonesense poured out the mouth of the loon cited above, now in a critical office of our government.
Rough rule of thumb in my view: Belief in inerrancy of any sacred text, belief one's religious views should be binding secular law, and the capability of saying with evident sincerity 'One man and God is a majority', are all views that render people holding them unfit for office in a Democracy.

(20,384 posts)Convinced of his moral superiority through a botched interpretation of Scripture. Secure in his self righteousness because he prays in public settings. This is not only the face of MAGA, its the face of modern evangelicalism.
This may be a blessing in disguise as this loathsome modern day Pharisee turns more people away from MAGA but the bastardized version of Christianity he practices.
