8. Actually, the greenbacks was the smartest thing we did in that nightmare of a fool's errand.

We bought off the Sunni sheikhs so they would turn on Al Qaeda in Iraq and that effectively ended the insurgence. The "surge" was a cover for the real operation. Brilliant move by Patraeus.

If we'd done that in Afghanistan, i.e., bought Osama Bin Laden, untold lives and billions upon billions would have been spared. Just name your price. The US government has all the money in the world. Would have been far cheaper than the 2.3 TRILLION we spend in a complete failure to democratize Afghanistan and eliminate the Taliban.

12. I hesitate to add my voice here,

but the Institution this family was involved with sounds a lot like the institution (as well as the type of man) I used to work with. His name was Albakri... a beautiful, peaceful man with a wonderful wife. This is what I was afraid of... recognizing names from long ago in another life of mine. Maj Bakri was involved in interfaith reachout with the AF pastors on Base. I'll never forget his kindness towards me and my daughter as I was going through my divorce. Made sure each Eid that the two of us had plane tickets home to spend the Eid with my family up here.

I feel like a horrible person hoping it was not him or his extended family... that just pushes the pain onto others. And in this situation there are no winners. Everyone is a loser.
