I just read that on a news alert on my phone. I'm always getting alarmng alerts on my government assistance phone. They are consistantly terrible. Sometimes they are about real news items several days old. They usually pop up when I check my phone after I wake up, so I can start my day miserable.
I used to get equally alarming weather alerts on my phone. One began with the words, "Drought, disease, disaster" (they may not have been in that exact order). I knew they were bogus, but when an alert popped up with a picture of a flying saucer, I thought, That does it, You have lost all credibility. I had one of the young counselors at my psychiatric services group delete that particular app. Looks like I'll have to ask her for some more assistance getting rid of these other nonsense news alerts.

I moved on to lasers a while back. They do quite a lot of damage without the boom and mushroom cloud.
Gotta go. Red phone is ringing. ☎️

(2,342 posts)Biden isn't building it. The military has proposed an upgraded version of an existing bomb. The B61-13 would utilize components of older existing B61 versions.....if the money is supplied by Congress to make it happen.

(76,693 posts)...of the casing. It's supposed to be as accurate as the dash 12, but the same yield as the dash 7.
It's barely fair to call it "new". More of an improvement or enhancement.

(2,118 posts). . . For providing, accurate, detailed information. Obviously, my point is that various "news" sources are regularly throwing out provocative news blurbs in an attempt to entice attention and clicks. And even if people don't bite (such as myself), there is at least a segment of the population that will read the pared down version of the situation--and not a word more-- and consider themselves informed.
ProfessorGAC
(76,693 posts)And, you're right.
It's a ridiculously inflammatory headline. BTW: the decision to pursue this updated technology was approved in, you guessed it, 2020. Before Biden was in office.

(2,118 posts)So very true! Unless you have a walk out basement, you don't build those bulky things in the basement 'cause you can't get it back up the stairs.
And Biden seems like the kind of sensible, hands on sort of guy who would know that. Now, Trump is the sort of fool who would hire people to build a giant death ray in his basement, (so he could stand next to it for a photo-op and take credit), then throw a Rumplestilskin-like tantrum upon being told that it would have to be completely disassembled before it could be moved. "Uh, sorry, sir, but it just won't fit up those stairs."

(2,118 posts)But my phone is my only means of contacting people in an emergency. And it regularly does weird things of its own volition. Sometimes, it stops making text alert sounds. The other day, it wouldn't let me open any contacts under "search contacts". A couple of years ago, it stopped ringing to let me know when it was receiving calls. I never opened or touched the "settings" icon.
I'm just very wary about fussing with my phone. It may be a flaw, but I've come to accept that about myself.

IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Department of Defense Announces Pursuit of B61 Gravity Bomb Variant
Oct. 27, 2023
Today, the Department of Defense (DoD) announced that the United States will pursue a modern variant of the B61 nuclear gravity bomb, designated the B61-13, pending Congressional authorization and appropriation.
The Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) would produce the B61-13. The decision to pursue this capability, which was undertaken in close collaboration with the NNSA, responds to the demands of a rapidly evolving security environment as described in the 2022 Nuclear Posture Review.
"Today's announcement is reflective of a changing security environment and growing threats from potential adversaries," said Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy John Plumb. "The United States has a responsibility to continue to assess and field the capabilities we need to credibly deter and, if necessary, respond to strategic attacks, and assure our allies."
The B61-13 would be deliverable by modern aircraft, strengthening deterrence of adversaries and assurance of allies and partners by providing the President with additional options against certain harder and large-area military targets. It would replace some of the B61-7s in the current nuclear stockpile and have a yield similar to the B61-7, which is higher than that of the B61-12.
"The B61-13 represents a reasonable step to manage the challenges of a highly dynamic security environment," said Plumb. "While it provides us with additional flexibility, production of the B61-13 will not increase the overall number of weapons in our nuclear stockpile."
The B61-13 would take advantage of the current, established production capabilities supporting the B61-12, and would include the modern safety, security, and accuracy features of the B61-12.
This initiative follows several months of review and consideration. The fielding of the B61-13 is not in response to any specific current event; it reflects an ongoing assessment of a changing security environment.
