NBCs Kristen Welker presses DeSantis over initial response to neo-Nazi protests
BY MIRANDA NAZZARO - 10/29/23 11:27 AM ET
NBC Meet the Press moderator Kristen Welker pressed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) over reports of him not condemning neo-Nazi protests, which came to light in a recent op-ed by Randy Fine, the only Jewish Republican in the Florida state legislature.
DeSantis, who has been vocal in his support of Israels right to defend itself against militant group Hamas after the groups deadly Oct. 7 surprise attack, came under fire from Fine, who said the governor was not strongly fighting against antisemitism in the Sunshine State and switched his endorsement to former President Trump.
In his op-ed, Fine wrote, 18 months ago, my Nazi friends showed up in Florida. They assaulted a Rabbi. They beat up a Jew who yelled back at one of their protests
.They commandeered highway overpasses to illegally hang banners saying Gas the Jews. They have tormented Jews at their homes with filth. Until a few weeks ago, Governor DeSantis said almost nothing. And worse, he did almost nothing.
Asked by Welker for his response to Fines accusations, DeSantis, who is also running in the Republican presidential primary, said, Well, hes just trying to get his 15 minutes of fame. I mean, this guy was singing my praises a couple months ago.

Podcast host Luke Thompson of "Constitutionally Speaking" spotted the symbol and explained it is a sonnenrad. The symbol is an ancient European symbol used by Nazis while idealizing "Aryan/Norse" cultures, explained the Anti-Defamation League.
"In Nazi Germany, the Nazi Party, the SA and the SS all used sonnenrad symbology at times, which has led neo-Nazis and other modern white supremacists to adopt such images," the group explained.
In DeSantis' version, the outer part of the circle says "Make America Florida," which has been his slogan.....
DeSantis has had troubles with Nazis over the past few years that he's been in office. In 2023, he hired a speechwriter with ties to neo-Nazis. After DeSantis waged war with Disney, neo-Nazis began protesting outside the park south of Orlando. The move came after a number of neo-Nazi groups started popping up around the state.

About 15 people with flags displaying Nazi insignia gathered outside Walt Disney World in Orlando for about two hours, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Office, as others displayed messaging in support of Gov. Ron DeSantis.
The U.S. is dealing with record highs of violence and hate speech directed at Jewish communities. According to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), there were 3,697 antisemitic incidents recorded in 2022, a 36% increase compared to 2021's record figures and the highest number since the ADL started keeping such statistics in 1979.
Florida, according to the Anti-Defamation League's Annual Audit of antisemitic incidents, has seen a similarly troubling trend. Harassment incidents jumped from 142 in 2021 to 214 in 2022, a 51% increase. Vandalism spiked by 15%, up from 47 in 2021 to 54 in 2022. In one incident, three assailants during a neo-Nazi demonstration in Orlando assaulted a Jewish college student.
