General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI have to take a break from Facebook for awhile or I swear I am going to run amok.
I have spent the past week defending Obama from the most bizarre bullshit attacks EVER. I am so sick and fucking tired of refuting total bullshit I could SCREAM. And if I completely debunk one thing, they just move on to another thing, completely ignoring what I have said.
There are people that six months ago I would have told you were normal and intelligent people who have just completely gone batshit over this whole election. BATSHIT. I don't think I will ever be able to look at them the same way again, and that makes me sad.

(6,262 posts)I have heard of too many friendships hurt or lost over someone's batcrap crazy opinion of politics that has nothing to do with the original basis for the friendship such as going to the same high school or sharing a love of gardening.
I have been dismayed by the fact that people I judged to be sane revealing themselves as suckers for Faux propaganda by their "likes" notices. I never respond in kind, and try to not think less of them. But I DO think less of them, and for that I am sad.
They know I love our Pres., but wisely never pick fights with me directly and perhaps wonder why I never "bite" on their posts.
Except for one, the lunacy has disappeared post election.

Only once has a friend posted a negative comment (about Obama) on my page--and I simply deleted it.

(14,087 posts)who is a gay republican (WTF?? ) , has said that NC, along with several other states, are seceding, and they are already preparing our military stationed in Afghanistan for the war that is about to break out in the USA over Obama's reelection, telling the soldiers that the United States is now going to be a group of separate countries. He knows this because his nephew is over there, and reported this in an e-mail. He says that all the people in town are arming for it.
I told him I love Obama, and I'm glad as hell he was re-elected. And that he has to understand that there are millions and millions of people like me who love Obama, and that is why he won.
He got flustered and changed the subject. I was placing a flower order for a funeral.
These people have gone batshit crazy.

(360 posts)due to the depression it caused upon finding out just how many white trash teabaggers lived in my home town of Okeechobee, Florida. I'm so glad I was able to leave after graduation and pursue my life among the educated. I don't think I would have become one of these wretched people, but I am still glad I left. I will not go back to wasting my time with those people.

(2,205 posts)for the most part, are ignorant racists. It really came out early last month, when one of my best friends from high school slammed me for liking Obama. She didn't just talk bad about him, she basically called me a freeloader for not working (I'm currently home with my kids--lots of WORK, but no pay), as well as a slut for having "lots of kids with more than one man."
I've been married exactly twice. All of my children belong to one of my husbands. I never realized that getting divorced and remarried made me a slut.
Anyway, I decided that I never really had much in common with her, and I certainly didn't need to be friends with someone so poisonous. She was something of a bully in high school, too, but at the time, there weren't a lot of options for friends in my very small town.

(11,816 posts)it's when they bash my President that I get mad.
I knew one college friend was hurting over the loss, so i let a lot of her comments slide. But last night, she posted a raging rant about the McKayla the gymnast picture, and how there was not class or grace in the White House, and I let her have it about Romney's post-election behavior, and how he should just STFU and go visit his money in a foreign country for a while.
What was funny is how many of her friends told her the same thing. She changed her rant to FEMA and how Obama wasn't doing enough in NY and NJ, and these same friends reminded her that she and Romney hated FEMA and "Big Government", so shouldn't she be telling these folks to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps?
Her problem is that she's a public school teacher, so she's forced to consort with the enemy every day! She can't stay in her husband's Fox "News" bubble.
barbtries
(31,325 posts)commenting, perhaps she'll come around. i am puzzled by a teacher being a republican, but know that it happens. somehow i think they're smarter than that.

(11,816 posts)The day before the election, she was posting pictures of herself at the PA Romney rally. Again - that's a-okay with me.
Just quit busting on a President that I think is bearing up remarkably well againt a shitstorm of nonsense he shouldn't have to be dealing with. Opposition is one thing, but the Birther/socialist/Kenyan bullshit is another.
And I agree - most of the teachers I know see what families have to deal with. It's hard for them to live in a bubble of "if you just work hard and live clean, everything is going to be peachy". They see parents working 2-3 jobs and what happens to families because 2 jobs doesn't even make ends meet.

(2,003 posts)related to the whole Hostess thing and an old friend of mine "liked it". So I posted this:
You know what I find both curious and amazing? Conservatives who are my age who complain about and put down unions. If I were a betting man I'd say a large percentage of them have/had at least one parent who was a union member. The funny thing is that because that parent was a union member odds are they had a pretty decent childhood. Dad made enough money so that mom didn't have to work unless she wanted to for whatever reason. Dad was probably home on the weekends because of the 40 hour work week - thanks to the union. Dad probably got a good vacation every year - thanks to the union. You probably had health insurance - thanks to the union. Last but not least dad probably got a pretty decent pension - thanks to the union. So bash unions all you want but without them workers are at the mercy of dirt bag bosses.
This friend's father was a union man.
After the election my older brother posted something about military absentee ballots and how Romney might have won but they got delayed or something. Well he found the story on what turns out to be a satire website. Sort of like the Onion but military "news". When I pointed that out his girlfriend sent me another link to the same story and I had to set her straight too. They didn't get back to me.

(36 posts)but this election had a noticeable effect on my friends list. I posted a couple of happy posts on election night, once the outcome looked solid, and lost five friends within minutes. Unfortunately, the lunatic "time to invest in a big gun" posts are still showing up on my newsfeed. I've lost respect for a lot of people over the last week or so.

(12,003 posts)Stop trying to change their minds. Some people just don't accept anything you say. Think about it, from their perspective I mean. The people who voted for Romney voted for a man who:
-Refused to show his tax returns, and those he did showed 14%
-Changed his view on every issue 2-7 times, sometimes within the same day
-Developed Obamacare
-Passed assault gun ban as Gov.
-Had tax shelters all over the world
-Outsourced jobs all over the world
-Owned companies that produced in China
-etc.
-etc.
Now, every white guy I know that voted for this kind of candidate either watches Fox or listens to A.M. radio. Or both. If they're really into it, Drudge, Free Republic, et al. They are completely isolated in a positive feedback loop. They are constantly being told, beyond the wackiness, that the media is lying to them. Everything is a conspiracy. If the media picks up on a story and it goes nowhere, "They killed it to protect the Kenyan!" If they don't pick up on a story, "They killed it to protect the Kenyan!" There is no reasoning with these people. When you see any sign of right-wing nuttery, block the feed. Save yourself the time and effort. You have to look at them as, you know, your average guy or gal. Who just happens to be a scientologist.
A family member recently told me that Obama is draining the great lakes and selling the water to other countries. Seriously. Glen Beck said. Oh, andshe got some emails! Now if she starts up you just nod your head and go uh-huh for 5 or 10 minutes and the conversation will change. Unless it's a sibling. You can tell your brother to shut the fuck up. I would probably be more diplomatic about it......can't wait for thanksgiving.
Anyway, the point is there is a percentage of people you just ain't gonna convince. Educate. Open their fucking eyes. Whatever.
Stop giving yourself a headache. Enjoy yourself man, or sweetheart, whichever you may be. Life is short. Stop talking to walls.
Just sayin

(53 posts)Have unfriended my share of people, too, and hidden others. Here's the deal. I don't respond to posts from conservative friends, but when they come on my wall to respond to something I've posted, they must argue respectfully. My sandbox, my rules. No name calling, conspiracy theories, or spreading bogus internet rumors. Facebook is probably not the best place for political comments, but social media played a major role in the Obama campaign strategy.
