We went to Vegas last week for a reunion of a US Navy Ceremonial Guard. I learned a lot. When the guys, all in their very early 70s, and all over six feet tall (a requirement to be part of the Guard) first met up it was surreal. There was no talking when they all gave each other the initial warm hugs. They had all served a year doing various duties together to help families say goodbye and bury dead soldiers from the Vietnam War. Sometimes there were up to six burials in a day. They shared a somber kinship that I can't even imagine. I felt so honored to get to be part of the experience. It was one of the nicest group of people I've ever met in my life. I hope they're all there for the next one, but I'm sure the reunions will be getting smaller as the years go by. The tears were flowing when goodbyes were said during the last meetup.
I thought I'd like Vegas, but it seems to be a lot different from the way it was when I was last there a few decades ago. The trashiness and greed seem more blatant. It would take an important event for me to go back. We did take a nice bus tour to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam, and also stopped at Lake Mead. The Grand Canyon has been on my bucket list, so I got to check that off.
We got back late Friday night. On Saturday afternoon I started feeling the first symptoms of COVID. I think it was worse that the last time I got it, but it lasted about the same length of time. On Sunday morning one of the guys sent out a group text asking if anyone else had COVID symptoms, and yes, every single one of us there were sick.
A weird thing about it this time was that I didn't lose my sense of taste until sometime between last night and this morning. I hope it doesn't last long. Last night I started craving corn chips and some sort of queso dip so strongly that I almost wanted to mask up and do a store run. I'm hoping to somehow get some today and actually taste it.

(16,448 posts)and completely lost my sense of smell... not even Vick's Vapo-Rub was detectable. I didn't completely lose taste, but it was distorted. For example, tea and cola drinks tasted bitter. You may find that your queso has no taste at all, or is not as pleasant as you expect. Please observe quarantine guidelines and don't "mask up" to mingle with others in a store. I hope you feel better soon!

(8,514 posts)I had a very important appointment this morning, but of course I rescheduled it.
I actually feel pretty much great now, in spite of having barely an hour of sleep, which is kind of weird. I have so much to get done, and now have to put it all on hold. Hopefully I can nap a little later. Thank you for the good wishes.

(9,173 posts)post vaccine, so it was mild for me. I didn't test for it or go to the doctor, just stayed home for a long time, feeling a little crappy and having headaches. The reason why I think it was Covid was because I was slicing onions and for the first time, didn't smell it and didn't have watering eyes. I thought something was wrong with the onion. I also realized I couldn't smell the fresh litter-box bombs my cats were leaving. Weirdest thing.

(8,514 posts)I'm drinking a cup now. There's sort of a faint taste of coffee. It's still oddly satisfying.

(2,274 posts)Each new variant seems to have different symptoms. My own case was the muscle ache one.... ached so bad for three days I could barely move. NO exaggeration. Taste and smell were minimally impacted.
Drink that coffee anyway lol, liquids you know

(8,514 posts)I think I'll have another cup after I finish my chips and queso. I can taste them, but I think the taste is distorted.

(8,514 posts)My daughter urged me to wait for the one for the new strain. I don't know if that was good or bad advice. I've had the original vaccine and four boosters. Even though this bout was very unpleasant for a day and a half, it wasn't unbearable. I think it was probably worse than the first time I had COVID. My SO got a much milder case than I had. He was surprised when he tested positive.
Really the biggest reason I hadn't gotten the last booster was because I have been so busy that I didn't think I had time to take off to deal with the side effects.

(5,729 posts)boosted. Got Covid for the 1st time early Summer, took Paxlovid Day 2 and congestion, fever left asap. Helps with prevention of Long Covid. Nothing provides guarantees. Its all about amelioration.

(8,514 posts)I guess I should call my doctor's office to check about the Paxlovid.

(179,958 posts)You need to start Paxlovid as soon as possible after testing positive. My oldest had Paxlovid within a couple of hours of testing positive from CVS and was felling better in two or three days. If you are recovering, then it may be too late for Paxlovid to help

(27,462 posts)My buddy got really sick last year. Vaxxed and boosted but didnt take Paxlovid. He was begging for mercy after a month.
So we didnt waste any time running for Paxlovid when we caught it.
I feel like I would have had a mild case but why risk it? You just dont know.

(179,958 posts)My oldest is fairly well read on Covid. He was in the initial Pfzier trial (he was luckily in the vaccinated group and not the test group). My oldest had a nasty case which is why he got Paxlovid so quickly. I have so many risk factors that I will not take any risks. Heck three of my doctors have told me to not wait if I test positive.

(29,371 posts)I literally ate ice cream every day because it was the only thing I could actually taste. True story: whenever I get a Covid booster, the same thing happens for a few days. That and intestinal issues were my main side effects for a bit. I wa slucky that OG Covid in January 2020 didn't kill me or leave me with lung or heart issues.
