In Los Angeles, a man screaming "kill Jews" attempts to break into a family's home. In London, girls in a playground are told they are "stinking Jews" and should stay off the slide. In China, posts likening Jews to parasites, vampires or snakes proliferate on social media, attracting thousands of "likes".
These are examples of incidents of antisemitism, which have surged globally since the attack by Hamas gunmen on southern Israel on Oct. 7 and subsequent war on the Islamist group launched by Israel in the Gaza Strip.
"This is the scariest time to be Jewish since World War Two. We have had problems before, but things have never been this bad in my lifetime," said Anthony Adler, 62, speaking outside a synagogue where he had gone to pray in Golders Green, a London neighbourhood with a large Jewish community.
Adler, who runs three Jewish schools, temporarily closed two of them after Oct. 7 because of fears of attacks on pupils, and has beefed up security at all three.

(27,591 posts)I was raised a Christian, and no one in my church or family ever expressed hatred or even dislike of Jews. My best friend was Jewish which was never a factor in our relationship.
This unadulterated hatred is evil and the threats of violence must not be tolerated.

(22,695 posts)Means ethnic cleansing because it can be applied to Likud. It's not like the last three weeks have been spent Hamas-splaining it simply meant people wanted to be free.
When it comes from Israel, or at least is words put in Israeli mouths, it has a different meaning.

(51,271 posts)and between Palestinian people and Hamas. And between individuals who had no choice in what is happening. It's dishonest and deplorable when some folks conflate a whole demographic to inflame hate. This kind of stuff is why the founders of Israel wanted a safe homeland for Jewish people from everywhere in the world to go.
Most of the Jewish people in my life are liberal hippies and are horrified by what is happening in Gaza. They shouldn't have to face harassment or abuse from people here in the US too. Some of the ones who immigrated from other countries have elderly relatives who retired and live in Israel. So there are plenty of stressful things on their minds all around.

(28,370 posts)When they thought Fauci was a Jew doctor (because arent all doctors Jewish?🙄. ) there was that business. Then Madoff -even if no one they knew even began to think about investing much less were a client of his. And on and on since time immemorial. Any reason to start in on the Jews is good enough. 🙄
