MI: Stalled $15 minimum wage proposal heads to court; hopes legislature next
A proposed law to increase Michigans minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2027 could be revived after being blocked this month by the Board of State Canvassers.
One Fair Wage the national group behind Raise the Wage Michigan sued the board on Monday in the state Supreme Court to force canvassers to certify the petition.
It got enough valid signatures last year more than 360,000 but the four-person boards two Republicans deadlocked approval because of a change in the petition language that was not announced by proponents nor previously noticed by opponents or canvassers.
Our lawsuit, filed to protect the voice of hundreds of thousands of voters, asks the Court to approve the signatures because the Board of State Canvassers had previously approved the form of the petition used to collect them, One Fair Wage president Saru Jayaraman said in a statement.
