CA: Breed airs grievances in ramp-up to 2024 reelection bid

Gearing up for a contentious reelection bid in 2024, San Francisco Mayor London Breed is pointing to an array of perceived impediments standing between her and a better San Francisco.

There’s the Police Commission, whose members she said “have gone way too far” and handcuffed cops’ ability to tackle crime, the Board of Supervisors with whom she’s clashed over fentanyl and housing, city-funded nonprofits who have lost her confidence, and the bulky city bureaucracy that she oversees.

Though she’s not up for reelection until next November, Breed’s plans to test this strategy with voters next March with multiple ballot measures, including one that would require drug screens for welfare recipients and another that would undo a Police Commission policy on car chases.

Without much daylight between them in terms of ideology, Breed’s opponents have already come out blasting her management style and administrative ability. At every turn, her challengers are calling her out for abdicating responsibility.

“After spending more than five years as mayor blaming everyone but herself for the city’s public safety crisis, the Mayor is pointing fingers at a commission and police department that she already controls,” Daniel Lurie, one of two prominent moderate challengers, said in a statement last month.
