seen it yet, GO NOW! Intense, epic, deeply disturbing, and LONG. . .3 & 1/2 hours, no intermission.
Taken from David Grann's meticulously researched "Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the Modern F. B.I."

(132,440 posts)disappointed, even though it had to be greatly condensed. The timeline of the federal investigation was shortened, and j. edgar not in at all. I will be getting the dvd as soon as it comes out, because I want to take my time going through, and honouring, all involved.
I have watched several interviews and documentaries about the film, about the Reign of Terror, and how much Scorsese involved the Osage Nation in the filming.
The sheer evil of the murders takes one's breath away, all based on greed, and contempt and hatred.
One interesting note was the reference to the Tulsa Race Massacre (I had not realized that it was covered before being buried and deliberately ignored), which happened within the limited timeframe that the film covered. Same hatred, same resentments, same ugliness and evil.

(3,750 posts)until I saw the Watchmen television mini series, which opens with a depiction of that event. It was so horrific I paused the episode one right there and had to look it up. How does this kind of history get buried? Oh right, never mind; Republicans. Its unpatriotic and anti American to study actual historical events.
America needs its own truth and reconciliation commission. We did that here in Canada in relation to the residential school tragedy. Doesnt make everything better, but its a start. And people who vehemently and violently oppose looking openly and frankly at the crimes of the past are a big part of the problem, and most often the ones who want to continue the tradition of systemic racism and hatred.
Dorian Gray
(13,850 posts)we both loved it, and he filled me in on a lot of background info that was cut. There were liberties taken. He didn't seem to mind them.
niyad
(132,440 posts)like your husband, I did not mind.
Too bad that it could not have been done like Spielberg's "Into the West", as a ten-part miniseries.
Dorian Gray
(13,850 posts)or limited series television show would have been fascinating and compelling. But that's not Scorcese's style!
From what it sounds like the cuts and additions added to the narrative quite well. Scorcese is a masterful storyteller. (One of the things my husband missed from the book was how well the FBI infiltrated the community. They showed it with the one character, but it was so brief.)

(132,440 posts)Doesn't Live Here Anymore", as I tend to avoid "scorsese red" (a throw-away line in "The Holiday"
, but this was incredibly well-done. The FBI investigation had to be condensed, of course, but done well.

(13,588 posts)The movie brought into great relief the amount of evil that was done.
Horrifying on a personal and grand level.

(38,718 posts)I'll probably watch it over multiple nights.
niyad
(132,440 posts)it was mentioned that, due to its length, it might take a bit longer than usual to get to streaming.
I definitely want to watch it again.

(4,489 posts)so I'll have to wait for streaming.
niyad
(132,440 posts)Fortunately, the theater where I watched it has those reclining lounge chairs, otherwise I could not sit that long, either.

(6,640 posts)I'd love to see it on the big screen, but I'd be climbing the walls at that length, so I'll just have to wait to see it later at home. Back in the famed "day" they used to insert intermissions into long films, which was a really good idea. I guess today they just see that as time when the screen isn't earning revenue.
niyad
(132,440 posts)There really was not a point where one could logically break. The concession stands make the money, after all.
Xavier Breath
(6,640 posts)they've done away with intermissions for all long films. My pet peeve, YMMV.

(9,488 posts)I'd rather see it on a big screen. Since there is no intermission, at what point after an hour or so would you suggest making run to the "concession stand"? Is there a scene I could afford to miss around half way through?
niyad
(132,440 posts)other trip, I really could not say.

(8,178 posts)Seems like something I'd rather stream to take the breaks I'll need, cuz I can't sit that long.
I do n't do apple plus, but I do Amazon Prime, they tend to stream new film releases. Hoping I can pick it up there?
niyad
(132,440 posts)And, you are most welcome. Read the book if you get the chance, it was an incredible piece of research. And there are a number of documentaries online about that Reign of Terror, an absolutely shameful, horrific part of this country's treatment of the Indigenous.

(9,012 posts)The 3 1/2 hrs was no problem because the compelling narrative and performances kept me so engaged I did not check my watch once.
I did think ahead and made sure to sit in an aisle seat.
Every creative element worked beautifully.
Maybe Martin Scorseses best ever.
niyad
(132,440 posts)I usually cannot sit for long periods, but had no trouble sitting through this incredible film. Of course, the lounge chair/recliner seating helps. And I made certain to get seating in the first row above handicap seating, so nothing in front of me.
Worth every moment.

(1,443 posts)more than anything else. It is too long but the time goes by fast. However, the films focus is on two white guys. Scorsese is still exploring and critiquing the archetypal Hollywood protagonist, esp. the "good bad guy" and the "bad good guy" as they used to describe characters in westerns. For me it was a personal disappointment. There are enough films about the white savior that we don't need to see another film that's main focus is on DeNiro (who is too old for the role) and DeCaprio. There are many independent films directed by Native Americans that never get the recognition that they deserve.

(9,012 posts)story the story? The FBI were hardly saviors, although some served time.
