" Krispy Kreme shares fell this week over worries that weight loss drugs will shrink demand for donuts"

T-Swift of stocks: Ozempic is upending markets, despite unknowns

With its outsized power to grab headlines, upend entire industries and dominate the public conversation, Ozempic has become the Taylor Swift of the stock market.

Driving the news: Krispy Kreme shares fell this week over worries that Novo Nordisk's Ozempic and other drugs that are being used for weight loss will shrink demand for donuts, Bloomberg reported.

It's not just breakfast treats purportedly being disrupted by the drug class known as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists.

Beer and snack stocks are plummeting. Walmart said it's taken a hit on food sales. Clothing brands could see a boost from slimmed-down shoppers eager to update their wardrobes. Airlines are already calculating how much lighter flyers will save them on fuel costs.

If a drug helps you lose weight, wouldn't you eat MORE donuts? leftstreet Nov 2023 #2
These drugs work by suppressing appetite, not by reducing absorption, so no. hlthe2b Nov 2023 #5

These drugs don't allow the overconsumption of massive quantities of food by magically getting your body to ignore or shed all the calories and fat. It kills your appetite and your taste for some foods.

The drugs don't teach self-discipline or help you develop better habits.

motility) which can lead to severe cramping, and in some cases life-threatening intestinal blockages. Right now, we don't know who is most at risk of those complications, so all the hype about weight loss is not being balanced by a message of the risks. Some may well come to regret it.

A close friend is on one of these. She was experiencing some sort of pain that ended up being a strong negative reaction from her kidneys. Her doctor told her that such reactions are common. "I was so relieved! I thought it was just me. Now I can keep taking it."

But, yeah, a person controls what they put in their mouth. If you know that the food you are eating is killing you, how is that someone else's fault? (Self-image is a completely different topic)

High fructose corn syrup is one of the worst things you can consume, and it is in so many processed foods.

I joke that Chinese food places have closed because of Keto. We had a place we went to for years. It closed about six months after I started Keto.

My wife takes a similar drug for her diabetes. She has dropped nearly 20 pounds in a year. Her sweet cravings are definitely reduced. The drug has helped with her A1C (when she was half dosing her A1C went up from 7.4 to 9.2 - f_ck the insurance companies who wouldn't pay for a second pen when her dosage amount pen wasn't available because everyone was taking the drug for weight loss).

Food can be as addictive as other drugs. An example is when my wife panicked when she thought she couldn't get her McD breakfast sandwich.

When he takes a holistic approach that gets his patients off of diabetes drugs. I just had to pay $150 out of pocket to do a calcium CT scan. I had the money to do it, but many do not. A heart attack is a whole lot more expensive.

I am at the point I get sick just thinking about eating a donut. Give me my Greek yogurt and blackberries.

Or drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes or drive to fast in my car or any other of other behaviors that come with some degree of risk. And with very few exceptions, I knew exactly what I was getting myself into.

I was there 2 weeks ago and as it usually is when I go (about once a month), it was a solid 5 cars deep. Of course, this is NC, the home state of Krispy Kreme.
The problem is not in having a doughnut ot two occasion, it's having a dozen or two every week.

Wednesday was always donut day at the office. One of the vendors would bring a few dozen in. It's all about self control. This guy has none. I saw him eat a large pizza with double cheese and double pepperoni. He's been on a diet and actually lost about 40 lb. Last week we did con ed for our Real Estate license. They feed us lunch and he had 2 heaping plates of wedding food.
