TEL AVIV, Israel Hundreds of thousands of people still stuck in northern Gaza will have just three hours to flee south today, Israel's military announced Saturday.
The Israeli Defense Forces announced there will be a brief three-hour window (starting 1 p.m. local time until 4 p.m.) for people trapped in northern Gaza to travel on the road to southern Gaza safely.
The United Nations estimates that there could be as many 300,000 internally displaced people still stuck in northern Gaza, including Gaza City an area Israeli forces have surrounded as part of their ground operation.
It's been about a week since Israeli troops pushed into Gaza through a ground offensive and remained in the Strip. This military effort has mostly been focused in the north and has effectively cut the strip in half, preventing aid from getting in or civilians from getting out.

to follow the "rules" of war, to provide humanitarian aide, to declare a ceasefire before the Israeli retaliation has even begun...Hamas can massacre at will, cheer their "work", hide among the Palestinians in Gaza,, and brazenly state they will attack Israel over and over again until every Jewish man, woman, and child is annihilated...

(6,454 posts)It goes along with the convenient forgetfulness that todays acute issues in Gaza are a straight line direct result of the acute Hamas attacks on 10/7.

NATO, in fact, facilitated the victory of the armed opposition to Gaddafi.
While words might possibly hurt Netanyahus feelings, bombs and missiles surely kill children in Gaza.

(7,921 posts)the children of Gaza before they slaughtered the Jewish children of Israel Bibis feelings are irrelevant

(1,148 posts)About slaughtering the Arab children of Palestine.
Because two wrongs make a right.
The children's right to life are as irrelevant to Israel as they were to Hamas.
That's what you are saying.

(7,921 posts)mutilated/beheaded/tortured/raped/slaughtered,/set on fire/kidnapped Israelis living their every day lives...Hamas knew Israel would retaliate..they instigated a war and tragically the innocent die in war..a Hamas spokesman claimed there will be more incursions into Israel, all Jews must be annihilated, and Palestinians are ready to die as martyrs.. and that includes the Arab children of Gaza....this is on Hamas...

(1,148 posts)This is why the cycle of violence never ends.
You have to be willing to see that Palestinians, including children, have born the brunt of the violence and killing. 1:23 ratio in the last 15 years. Look at the violence of the settlers, the forced displacements, the annexation of their lands, the denial of human rights, the water apartheid, the occupation and blockade, the near-starvation diet, the harassment at checkpoints and on and on.
You would rise up too against all that. You can only keep a people under your boot for so long before they retaliate.
What Hamas did was horrific and immoral. No excuse, no justification. While I hope they are eliminated, I fear that their ideology will live on. You have to defeat the ideology and that is only through justice and statehood for Palestinians.
It's easy to condemn Hamas, who doesn't? But to accept your own wrongs, or that of your own side, takes a bigger person. There is a sizable group of Israeli Jews and diaspora Jews who can see the bigger picture too and are raising their voices, against the war too.
These are peole who can see that:
A child is a child.
An innocent is an innocent.
Their lives are to be safeguarded and protected. Yes, EVEN IN WAR!
War does not give carte blanche to kill them needlessly or indiscriminately.
The safeguards against that are in the Geneva Conventions and other humanitarian laws.
If a nation at war doesn't follow those laws, they will soon become a pariah nation and lose all support.
If for nothing else but self-interest, Israel needs to reconsider what it is doing. Both in how they wage this war and their policies and practices regarding Palestinian lives, lands and statehood.

(7,559 posts)And have vowed to do so again and again.
Hamas has to go.
I hope the civilian population in Gaza City evacuates. While Hamas has to go
they should go with as few innocent civilians getting killed as possible.

(1,148 posts)The conventions they are a signatory to?
Seems Israel neglected to tell its allies about that when they enlisted their support.
No one is asking Israel to do anything above and beyond the Geneva Conventions and basic humanitarian law.
Just out of curiosity, what should the people of Gaza eat if there is no humanitarian aid or corridor. And how many more child victims of the bombing should undergo amputation or life-saving surgery without anasthesia?

(39,427 posts)Three hours for 300k people to skedaddle.
Not impressed and thats not a criticism of Blinken.

(16,496 posts)I think Israel has been extremely accommodating.

(39,427 posts)Which is what Blinken was trying to get across to them yesterday. His comments are the last half of the clip.
Three hours is not a humanitarian pause.

(23,774 posts)The US pays a price each day this continues.
It allows Hamas to regroup, infiltrate Israeli lines, and cause havoc during the 3 hours. Much blowback.

(3,088 posts)that you are, too. So, get Hamas all in one place, blow them up, and we're done, right?
Keep the fight up

(16,502 posts)That Hamas is shooting and killing women and children trying to move south. I'm waiting for better sources before posting about it.
SickOfTheOnePct
(7,290 posts)That people are being shot as they try to leave, well be told that the shooters are IDF disguised as Hamas.
Sympthsical
(9,238 posts)You're supposed to make the claim, disseminate it as much as possible, and express all of the outrage.
If it doesn't turn out to be true, who cares? You'll have already moved on to the next thing.
Never slow down long enough to let people realize you're spreading bullshit. This is the social media way!
(Heavy, heavy sarcasm, in case that's needed for others. Also, I agree with you. I'd really wait for some concrete verification before discussing something like that)

(1,148 posts)This is cruel beyond words.
A 3-hour window to walk 10-20 miles on a broken road littered with body parts. With children, elderly, injured and sick. Weak from subsisting on 2 pieces of bread a day per the UN and dehydrated and sick from dirty water.
Most Gazans don't have cars. If they do, there is little gas available. So walking would have been the only option for most, an impossibility.
This is a cynical and cruel CYA move.
A sickening passage from the article:
"By the end of this window, an NPR reporter in Gaza had not encountered anyone able to use this so-called safe passage. Several drivers there shared that it was impossible for anyone to make it through on the damaged street.
One driver told NPR that he and his brother were heading south and found that the roads were not passable, that "there are holes in the ground, and we saw body parts strewn all over Salah al-Din," the main highway in the Gaza Strip."
If Israel thinks they have gained impunity from more war crimes with this cynical move, and can continue to victim-blame, they really don't understand most of the world sees it very differently.
