(2,369 posts)Dont go there. Israel is murdering innocent Gazans by the thousands. Having a murderous attack by Hamas happen doesnt absolve Israel of its crimes against the Gazan Palestinians now or over decades.
And Syria? Barely any protests have happened. Most Americans barely know what is happening in Syria.

(17,802 posts)I really don't recall any mass protests against the Russian invasion of Ukraine, or its continuing campaign to kill Ukrainian civilians. Maybe small ones outside their embassy, but nothing huge or sustained.
And let's be clear. Russia isn't targeting military targets and hitting civilians. Russia is taking joy in intentionally killing civilians. They are intentionally using rape, castration, child kidnapping, and other war crimes as state policy.
Calling out hypocrisy is entirely on topic.
Yes, Palestinians are going through hell. But it is a hell brought on them entirely by hamas, and one that can be ended by hamas. Hamas wants this fight, and they want the Palestinians stuck in the middle.
And that's where we are.

(94,261 posts)...I'm old enough to remember Palestinian advocates marching along with our anti-Gulf and Iraq war protests.
I'm not understanding why it makes a difference what these people are shouting in the streets, if you disagree. It's not making any more of an impact on the national debate or direction than it has for decades now.
I dunno, maybe I'm being too cynical here. A growing movement in the U.S. for a 'ceasefire' may affect some U.S. military posture somewhere.
But it's not going to block the temporarily stalled package of weapons and other military assistance to Israel republicans are fumbling with- all free for Israel to do what they will in Gaza or anywhere else they choose.
If you live near D.C., as I have most of my life, you'll see myriad protests every week in the city. No one here really gives a shit.
In fact, they get more attention and visibility from concern expressed by detractors than from anywhere else.
In other countries their mileage may vary.

(4,263 posts)They are protesting their government's position regarding the war in general and inaction on a ceasefire in particular. Are those Western governments on the side of Russia or Syria?
I don't see the equivalency.

(25,409 posts)I protested against the Vietnam War, our involvement in Central America, and our adventures in Iraq and Iran.
I did not protest because I hate America. I love my country, but I will stand up when I think it is making mistakes.
I have not protested the actions of Israel, but I fear they are making a mistake by creating new potential terrorists. Half the population of Gaza are under eighteen, and I suspect the support for Hamas was waning among them.
Osama attacked the US in the hopes we would over react and push more people into his camp. I suspect Hamas, whose leaders are comfortably living outside of Gaza, have similar goals.
