Top 10 Conservative Idiots Presents: Holy Shit: The Sunday Sermons Season 2 Episode 2: Cults Of Personality

Gather around my fair brothers and sisters! It’s time to take a seat in the pew and pass the collection plate, for the Holy Church Of The Top 10 has convened and it’s time to remind you that the holiest among us are the most full of:

My fair congregation! Please be seated! You know we simply forgot to bring you episode 2 last week, so we’re bringing you a super-sized edition this week! Lately, the talk coming from supporters of the unholy, ungodly Dark One is that they’re not satisfied with being referred to as a cult. Even though they do exhibit an unusually fair amount of cult-like behavior. Which includes unaltered leader worship and some very insane levels of merchandising. As you know, I refer to him as the “Dark One” because I speak of a man so foul, so depraved and disgusting that his name dare NOT be spoken in my church or you will be cast to the fieriest pits of the darkest depths of HELL! Because that’s what he and his supporters bring- they bring darkness and insanity. They live in a cult, and we’re here to dissect that.

In the number one slot this week, we’re going to simply define what a cult of personality is (1) because lately, a lot of people have been throwing that word around a lot, but do you really know what a true cult of personality is and what it means? Well, we’re here to educate you on that subject! Because we educate as well as entertain! In the number 2 slot, we’re going to talk about when cults go wild, as a real-life Catholic cult that’s been associated with the Dark One’s Supreme Court justice pick Amy Comey Barrett, called “People Of Praise” and they’re in some serious trouble with the law, and they have some explaining to do! In the number 3 slot, also on the subject of cults, there’s a Christian Nationalist from North Carolina who simply wants to open his own hard-lined military academy, which is really just a glorified Bible school with more of the right wing’s flag drag and cowboy cosplay that they are known for, combined with some old school fire and brimstone punishment. Finally, as always, we’re going to end by answering your prayers from the Holy Shit Hotline To Heaven! Enjoy! And as always don't forget the key!

My fair congregation! Please be seated! You know, this week, we’re going to do a bit of investigative reporting here. Too often, especially lately, we’ve been accused of calling out the GOP and MAGA for being a cult, and without any evidence to back it up. Well, this week, we’ve got evidence. And it’s all not exactly what one would call “good”. It’s definitely against supporters of the unholy Dark One! I of course speak of a man so foul, so depraved and disgusting that his name dare NOT be spoken in my church! But today, my friends, we’re going to answer the question – why is the GOP so cult like? And the answer may surprise you. Most cults aren’t just one major cult, they’re usually a collection of smaller cults with even more fervent followers. And cults come in many different forms as well, and can usually be tailored to your level of insanity. But you know before we go any further, let’s first define what a cult of personality is. A cult of personality is one that is defined through a leader and media manipulation through targeted propaganda. Sound familiar?

A cult of personality, sometimes referred to as a personality cult, is defined as “exaggerated devotion to a charismatic political, religious, or other leader.”1

Authoritarian figures, such as Benito Mussolini of Italy and Vladimir Putin of Russia, are often associated with cults of personality, as are totalitarian regimes such as the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin, Germany under Adolf Hitler, and North Korea under Kim Jong-Un.

Leaders of cults of personality often use imagery and the manipulation of mass media to form an exalted, even superhuman, version of their persona in the minds of their followers.2 Their followers accept the leader's persona and authority, which leads to their devotion to the leader and their mission to bring about an imagined future.3

The term “cult of personality” was popularized after Nikita Khrushchev used it in a 1956 speech to the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, in which he denounced the ongoing cult of personality surrounding Joseph Stalin, who had died three years prior.

You know that’s one thing about modern MAGA conservatives is that they think that they want a rock star president. But the one thing about cults of personality is that they don’t just “appear” out of thin air overnight. This was a creation. This was the product of 50 years of heavily one sided propaganda. It’s been at least one or maybe two generations since Rush Limbaugh first started infecting the airwaves and it was manifested on Fox News and mutated on the dark corners of the internet. So it’s not just Trump who’s the ring leader. As we’ve seen with past cults, every cult leader has enablers and they all allow the cult leader to get away with abuses of power.

A top Republican figure has warned that the party under Donald Trump has become a “cult of personality” and it could not afford to try and put the former US president back in the White House in 2024.

Larry Hogan, a former Maryland governor, had been widely tipped to enter the party’s nomination race but instead used an op-ed in the New York Times on Sunday to announce he would not be running and to warn against Trump’s own 2024 campaign.

“I would never run for president to sell books or position myself for a cabinet role. I have long said that I care more about ensuring a future for the Republican party than securing my own future in the Republican party,” Hogan wrote.

He went on to warn that the Republican party cannot be successful if it puts “personality before principle, if our elected officials are afraid to say publicly what they freely admit behind closed doors, and if we can’t learn from our mistakes because of the political cost of admitting facts to be true”.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/mar/05/larry-hogan-republican-will-not-enter-2024-race

And therein lies the problem with the modern GOP – they did just that. They saw how successful President Obama was in getting his message out to the people, and that they showed up and showered him with praise when he held rallies. The Dark One, on the other hand, attempted that, only to discover that a small handful of people want to hear a deranged, old white male spout the same white supremacist internet conspiracies they’ve heard a thousand times. But one thing we know about authoritarian cults is that they never end well.

Nearly two years later — after a riot, an impeachment, and a monomaniacal campaign to punish the Republicans who tried to hold him accountable — Ben-Ghiat has ample proof of her thesis. And she professes even more concern that Trump’s sway over the GOP has permanently transformed the party’s political culture. “He’s changed the party to an authoritarian party culture,” she told me. “So not only do you go after external enemies, but you go after internal enemies. You’re not allowed to have any dissent.”

With the midterms and some key governors races approaching, Ben-Ghiat is looking around the corner again. She sees dangerous signs of autocracy seeping into state houses and governors’ mansions where leaders such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis are executing policies and enacting laws that mimic Trump but with a smoother, less bombastic style.

She insists her urgent warnings should not be construed as fatalism. Throughout our interview she leavened her direst predictions with a pragmatic if not sunny optimism. Political violence is more likely than an actual civil war; a Republican takeover in November would be catastrophic but she remains heartened by the ability of American voters to “interrupt an autocratic personality who’s in the middle of his project;” and ballot box victories alone don’t stop autocrats but the law can. “It takes prosecution and conviction to deflate their personality cults,” Ben-Ghiat said. “That’s what it takes.”

But that’s the thing with cults – they don’t worship a deity, they worship the leader. And the leader is all knowing and all powerful. It doesn’t take a religious scholar, or even an armchair religious scholar, to figure this one out. And I’m not even going to point out the irony of the fact that a group of people who claim to despise tyranny want to be ruled by an authoritarian dictator. But despite the fact authoritarian cults never end well, what about getting their leader out of power and into prison? The Dark One is an indicted felon 91 times over. What’s it going to take to finally bring him down?

None of those legal matters involve the true OG of Trump cases: what has gone down in history as the Mueller investigation. From 2017 until 2019, former FBI Director Robert Mueller led a special counsel inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election in order to help Trump win, probing whether Trump or any of his campaign aides or allies collaborated with the Russians. The inquiry found multiple connections between Trump allies and Russian officials and intelligence agents, while also uncovering strong evidence of obstruction of justice by Trump, who was seeking to impede Mueller’s inquiry.

Mueller did not issue criminal charges against Trump, but he made it clear that Trump could have been charged with obstruction if he had not been the sitting president at the time. In his final report, Mueller pointed to a Justice Department guideline against federal indictments of sitting presidents, strongly suggesting that was the only reason he didn’t charge Trump with obstruction. He later told Congress that a president could be charged with obstruction of justice after he left office, but the Biden administration has not revived those charges.

None of the legal cases address Trump’s unrelenting racist demagoguery, his mentally unbalanced embrace of conspiracy theories, or his casual use of lies and disinformation to defend himself and attack his enemies. In 2021, the Washington Post’s fact-checking team concluded that Trump had made 30,573 false or misleading claims over the four years of his presidency.

My fair congregation! Please be seated! You know, I keep saying that we live in very dark times and it doesn’t seem like things are getting any better. Last year, if you remember, the worshippers of the unholy, ungodly Dark One finally got their hands on the grand prize they’ve been salivating over for 450 years: the overturning of Roe V. Wade. And of course I call him the Dark One, because I speak of a man so foul, so depraved and disgusting that his name dare not be spoken in my church! While they’re enjoying their ill gotten gains, there may be a ripple in their, well, whatever their path to righteousness is. You know, we always thought that the appointment of justice Amy Comey Barrett was an extremely terrible idea, given that she’s a member of a certified Catholic cult that’s been gaining huge grounds in states like Indiana and Illinois. I’m talking about the super far right group called People Of Praise. And lately, they’re back in the news and they’ve definitely got some explaining to do about what they’ve been up to lately.

The FBI has reportedly interviewed a number of individuals who alleged they were abused by members of a Christian group that counts Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett as a member.

Barrett's affiliation with People of Praise, a conservative religious group that elevates the role of men, drew scrutiny ahead of her appointment to the highest court in the nation.

One former member told Newsweek in 2020 that women are expected to be "absolutely obedient" to their husbands and the men in the group and those who aren't are "shamed, shunned, humiliated."

At least five individuals have been contacted by the FBI, a spokesperson for a group called PoP Survivors confirmed to Newsweek on Tuesday. The development was first reported by The Guardian.

Mass has ended, may you go in peace! That’s it this week for:
https://www.newsweek.com/amy-coney-barrett-christian-group-probed-fbi-1831689

Yes this group called People Of Praise has got themselves in trouble with the law. And it really brings into question what their role in getting Barrett to the Supreme Court was. Because as we have said, these are people who worship the unholy Dark One! So who’s accusing this cult of abuse? And why are they called a cult, you might ask? Well, as we have previously discussed, all cults have charismatic leaders, they have parishoners who give them piles of money unasked, and they are 9 times out of 10 accused of some kind of egregious abuse of their followers. I don’t know what happens with that other 1, but we assume they’re guilty of abuse too.

The FBI has interviewed several individuals who have alleged they were abused by members of the People of Praise (PoP), a secretive Christian sect that counts conservative supreme court justice Amy Coney Barrett as a lifelong member, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The individuals were contacted following a years-long effort by a group called PoP Survivors, who have called for the South Bend-based sect to be investigated for leaders’ handling of sexual abuse allegations. The body, which has 54 members, has alleged that abuse claims were routinely mishandled or covered up for decades in order to protect the close-knit faith group.

It is not clear whether the FBI has launched a formal investigation into the PoP.

The Guardian has confirmed that at least five individuals were contacted by the FBI and four gave detailed accounts to agents of abusive behavior they allegedly experienced or witnessed. Individuals spoke to the Guardian on the condition of anonymity and said they believed the FBI interviews were part of an initial inquiry.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/oct/03/fbi-people-of-praise-amy-coney-barrett-faith-group-abuse-allegations

Well here’s the thing that I want to stress before we go any further is that we’re not here to make fun of abuse. But we are fascinated with cults. And we are here to call out abuse and injustice when we see it because that’s what should be done! But when this was called out back when Barrett was first nominated in 2020, shouldn’t that have been a sign that these people were bad news? But nope, despite that Barrett is a member of the People Of Praise cult, there’s a much bigger cult in charge and that’s the American republican party. Hell, they meet all the signs of a cult. And the cult wants what it wants!

In December, Katie Logan called the police in this Minneapolis suburb to unearth a buried secret: Her high school physics teacher had sexually assaulted her two decades earlier, she said. She was 17 and had just graduated from a school run by a small Christian group called People of Praise. He was 35 at the time, a widely admired teacher and girls’ basketball coach who lived in a People of Praise home for celibate men.

Logan told police she reported the June 2001 incident to a dean at the school five years after it happened. Police records show the dean believed Logan and relayed the complaint to at least one other senior school official.

But the teacher, Dave Beskar, remained at Trinity School at River Ridge until 2011, when he was hired to lead a charter school in Arizona. In 2015, he returned to the Minneapolis area to become headmaster of another Christian school. Beskar denies that any inappropriate sexual activity took place.

Yes! These things are regurgitated by the real SAYTAN – and that’s the unholy Dark One himself. He went ahead and appointed Barrett to judge the supreme law of the land regardless of the fact that the rest of the country and the world all said that it was an extremely terrible idea! But nevertheless, the great SAYTAN went and appointed her anyway! Which gives credence to her and to her masters in People Of Praise. Look, these are some very bad dudes! We cannot stress that enough! But like we said, the cult wants what it wants and it’s going to get what it wants unless we stop them!

The FBI is reportedly probing a Christian faith group that counts Catholic Supreme Court justice Amy Coney Barrett as a member, months after Republicans accused the agency of targeting Catholics.

The agency has interviewed several people who claim they were abused by members of the group, People of Praise, sources told the Guardian. Barrett, who was elevated to the Supreme Court by former president Donald Trump, has been a member of the South Bend, Indiana-based group for decades.

It is not clear whether the agency has launched a full investigation or is just conducting interviews.

During Barrett's confirmation process in October 2020, her critics hammered on her association with People of Praise, framing the group as radical and misogynistic. Media outlets publicized allegations against the group by a former member who, the Washington Free Beacon reported, has a history of far-fetched claims, litigiousness, and hyper-partisanship.

My fair congregation! Please be seated! So we’ve been talking about cults a lot lately and for good reason – they’re in the news because supporters of the Unholy, Ungodly Dark One have grown increasingly cult like in their behavior. I of course speak of a man who is so foul, so depraved and disgusting that his name dare NOT be spoken in my church! Well in our quest to understand cults and cult like behavior, I recently got tipped off to some strange happenings in North Carolina. There, a megachurch pastor and super fan of the Dark One, Mark Burns, is planning to simply open his own Christian military academy. Yeah gee, what great way to install fear of the LAWRD in the hearts of America’s youth than with some good ol’ fire and brimstone combined with the right wing’s flag drag obsession? I mean what could possibly go wrong there?

Mark Burns, an unabashed Christian nationalist Trump-loving pastor who was among the far-right activists who worked tirelessly to keep former President Donald Trump in office after he lost the 2020 election, spoke at the most recent ReAwaken America event last weekend where he announced that he is launching his own Christian military academy.

Burns, who was busted for falsifying his military and academic record during his failed congressional bid in 2016, is a regular at the ReAwaken America events, which are little more than a traveling cavalcade of outlandish conspiracy theories and violent rhetoric mixed with aggressive Christian nationalism and nonstop Trump worship. Fittingly, members of the Trump family and his inner circle have become regular participants in these events, with both Eric Trump and his wife Lara speaking at the most recent one, which was once again held at a Florida property owned by former President Donald Trump.

As usual, most of Burns’ remarks at the event centered around heaping praise on Trump and leading the audience in chants in support of Trump.
https://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/christian-nationalist-mark-burns-military-academy/

Now we’re gonna have some fun with this one. Normally this is where we’d get outraged and talk about how the Dark One has his dirty, rotten, evil fingers in everything. And that’s not exactly what JAYSUS would want now is it? But instead, my friends, I decided instead to figure out – what kind of classes would they offer in such a school? Well it certainly wouldn’t be anything traditional. It would be some serious reality-denying shit. After all, Pastor Burns is a regular at the ReAwaken America event, which is a religious revival but with more conspiracy theories. Don’t worry we’ll get to that next week. But if they had someone like David Barton as a history professor, that would be the weirdest history class ever.

One of the problems encountered by Christian nationalist pseudo-historians like David Barton is how to address the issue of slavery. After all, the core of Barton’s message is that the Founders of this nation were good Christian men who intended to create a good Christian country but this narrative conflicts with the simple fact that many of those same Founders owned slaves.

While modern Christians like Barton no longer believe that the Bible condones slavery, many of the American Christians who owned slaves certainly believed that it did. As such, Barton has traditionally had difficulty addressing the issue.

But recently, Barton appears to have hit upon a novel new argument that he seems to believe finally allows him to continue to deliver his core Christian nationalist message by blaming the existence of slavery in the United States on “progressives.”

Last month, Barton unveiled a new presentation at the Truth & Liberty Coalition’s conference in Colorado, where he compared and contrasted the founding of Jamestown, Virginia, by “professing Christians” in 1607 to the founding of the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts by “biblical Christians” in 1620.
https://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/david-barton-blames-slavery-on-progressives/

No, Mr. Barton, there is no other side of slavery. In fact, you may recall that we fought an entire war over this. A civil war if you will. It lasted 5 years. It cost over a million lives. It also resulted in the assassination of one of America’s greatest presidents. Any of that ring a bell? Or maybe you have this guy Robert Henderson teaching a civics class. I mean come on… what kind of civics class would replace the Constitution with GAWD? Not one in the entire world. This isn’t so much a Christian military reform academy… it’s sounding like the Christian school from hell. And what parent wouldn’t want their children attending such an academy?

Right-wing pastor Robert Henderson was a deeply committed member of the Cult of Trump when former President Donald Trump occupied the White House, so much so that he declared that God had called him to serve as Trump’s spiritual running mate in the 2020 election.

Henderson was so committed to Trump, in fact, that he proclaimed that anyone who opposed Trump was “fighting with God” and went so far as to insist that Trump “should never be criticized.”

“We are violating the laws of God, and we are violating the ways of God by rising up and speaking evil against President Trump,” Henderson said during a church service in 2020. “People may not like his mannerisms, they may not like the way he does things, they may question his motives, but here’s the reality: He sits in the seat of the president of the United States of America, and because of that, he should never be reviled, he should never be spoken evil of, he should never be criticized.”

Obviously, now that Trump is no longer president, Henderson no longer believes that whoever “sits in the seat of the president of the United States of America … should never be spoken evil of, he should never be criticized” because when he appeared on “The Jim Bakker Show” today, he did not hesitate to criticize President Joe Biden.
https://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/robert-henderson-never-be-criticized/

Yeah so picture your children learning from this crock of insane lunatics. You can’t do it, can you? I mean I know if I had kids, they would stay as far away from that school as humanly possible! So you have David Barton teaching history and Robert Henderson teaching civics. Who would teach the science class at this school? How about since we’re going full on denialism, how about we put this guy Wayne Christian in charge of teaching that class? So slavery is OK, and the Constitution is somehow equated with the Bible, which it isn’t. The two mix together like olive oil and vinegar. So how about we add some good ol’ fashioned environmental denial? It’s the work of Baal, you know. Hey come on, I play Diablo IV too. It is a game where the object is to kill the devil!

On Monday, the Christian nationalist organization Christians Engaged broadcast a panel from the organization’s 2022 conference in which several elected officials discussed how their Christian faith shapes their work in office.

Among the participants was Wayne Christian, who serves as Texas Railroad Commissioner. Despite its name, the Railroad Commission of Texas does not actually oversee the state’s railroad, but rather wields jurisdiction over the state’s oil and natural gas industry and infrastructure.

During the panel, Christian declared that concern about protecting the environment is Baal worship.

“How does your Biblical understanding of Christian principles translate into this conversation and apply to this conversation about energy and resources and how we are stewards of God’s earth?” asked the moderator, Texas state Rep. Matt Schaefer.

“The biggest scam in history—I’ve found in the six years I’ve been as your Railroad Commissioner—is this Green New Deal,” he continued. “All this is the biggest scam on the public worldwide.”

The Holy Shit Hotline To Heaven
[br]
[br]

My fair congregation! Welcome back to our spinoff show. This is the part of every episode where we dial up the Holy Shit Hotline To Heaven! This is just a free form segment where we answer whatever is on your mind. If you want to contribute, hit us up on Mastodon at holychurchoftop10@mstdn.party. Don’t worry, we’re friendly folks around here. Don’t be shy! Plus this also gives us a chance to play some of the wacky clips that the religious right gives us on an almost daily basis. Because worshippers of the unholy, ungodly Dark One are clinically insane and they just get nuttier and crazier and far more cult like every single day. Let’s open it up and go to the hotline, shall we?

Denise P. from Portland, Oregon writes:

Heavenly Father,

What is the MAGA obsession with having mysteriously adopted children? First Matt Gaetz had that 25 year old claiming to be his son, and now Mike Johnson claims to have adopted a 14 year old. What’s up with that?

Well, Sister Denise, that is a very complicated question with which there is no easy or direct answer. But don’t worry, it will be the future topic of one of our upcoming sermons as we learn more about the megachurch pastor who the MAGA Qongress has chosen to be the new Speaker Of The House. It’s some very weird and extremely frightening stuff.

Jackson N. from Tuscon, AZ writes:

“Heavenly Father,

Should I be worried when my fellow zealots start talking about taking up arms? Why would they do such a thing?”

Yes, Brother Jackson, you should be very concerned. The MAGA rhetoric is getting more intense and violent by the day. And if your local church is talking about taking up arms for the unholy Dark One, not only should they be stripped of their tax exempt status, they should probably be put on an FBI terrorist watch list or two. We have no idea where they’re going with the extremist violent talk, but we imagine that it can’t be good! And what would they be taking up arms over? We may have to do a deep dive on this subject in a future sermon.

Greg L. from Brooklyn, New York writes:

“Heavenly Father,

Why does it seem like the MAGAs keep comparing everything that’s going on to Hitler and Nazi Germany despite that they’re the ones causing all the problems?”

Well Brother Gregory, I do share your concern that this is very troubling. But they’re doing it a lot and it seems like it keeps escalating. We’ve railed on the sub-cult within the MAGA cult called Moms For Liberty in the past. If you’re not alarmed by their actions, you absolutely should be. This comparing everything to Nazi Germany really started back in the days when Glenn Beck did it and it continues to this day. Why it’s still a thing, we may never know. But we do have some clips!

Olivia M. from Chino Hills, California writes:

Heavenly Father, I live in Jack Hibbs’ district and I know quite a few people who go to his church and vote the way that he does. Should I be afraid? Do I need to find a new place to worship?

Well, Sister Olivia, the short answer is yes. The longer answer is that it’s complicated. Jack Hibbs is one of many MAGA preachers who preach the values of the unholy Dark One. What is happening in Chino Hills is something that we hope doesn’t inspire copycats, but knowing the day and age in which we live, it probably will. But Jack Hibbs is one bad dude, and the fact that he’s trying to implement himself with the Dark One is very scary.

Carlos C. from El Paso, Texas writes:

Heavenly Father,

How come there is no official response from your church about the horrifying events going on in Israel and Palestine? I know it’s a sketchy subject but we would like to see something.”

Well, Brother Carlos, your concerns are noted. We had a lot of meetings here at the home offices in Santa Ana, and we had a lot of very lively discussions as to how to approach the matter of religion in the Hamas conflict. The short answer right now is that we stand by our policy to only make fun of the lighter side of religion. We may address it next season or in a future Sunday Sermons episode. But for now, the reason why we’re not touching it is because it’s very controversial, and our friends on the right are extremely opinionated about it. and we wouldn’t want to piss them off now, would we? Ah who am I kidding, of course we plan to at some point!

Thank you my fair congregation! Mass has ended, may you go in peace! We will return on Sunday, November 19th, with episode 3 (for real, no hiccips, we promise!)!
