hard by Christstain Nationalist Hillsdale College. In Camden Michigan a petition will move forward to remove school board members who committed the mortal sin of deciding to not belittle indigenous people any longer. The school board decided to do away with mascot and name Redskins. For the knuckle draggers that was a bridge too far.
I was embarrassed to hear it announced on local radio station and I'm embarrassed to post it, but that is living in a deep red county.

(36,752 posts)So glad I live in Ingham County. Condolences. And, as an Ojibwe, I find that name hurtful and offensive but, sadly, I will be shocked if the name is actually changed, but I certainly hope the School Board resists the pressure of the willful ignorant.

(24,906 posts)rape is merely a compromise. You know, if you can't fight it, you might as well lay back and enjoy it, right?

(6,447 posts)What is so difficult about changing the name and/or mascot to something less insensitive? This reminds me that I should start a movement to change the name of one of our local high schools from Boone County Rebels to something less confederate sounding. After all, Kentucky did not secede from the Union and the majority of the Kentuckians who fought in the Civil War fought for the Union. Yet this state is littered with confederate war memorials, place names, etc.

Plus, Brutus is the effing coolest college mascot and when you hear "The Best Damn Band in the Land", you know they are taking about "THE" Ohio State Buckeyes!

There was something about being on a border state that brought out the worst in those types.
And looking at the history of Kansas/Missouri makes me think that "southerners" are just wired for hatred.

(6,447 posts)I think you may be on to something. While Kentucky never seceded from the Union there was a good deal of sentiment behind secession and violent clashes between the pro-Union and pro-confederate people.

Maybe the whiteskin can be holding a hunting rifle - perhaps an ar-15!

Listen to them when they are asked question about the "How would you like ...." They want to see their whiteness on T Shirts bumper stickers etc.
The idea to be screaming "Go Whiteskin" would give them pride, I shit you not.

(6,197 posts)Where our Governor persists in pushing through school vouchers because his Christian Nationalists, white supremacists base dont want their kiddies rubbing shoulders with those people in public school.
Fine, sendem to a private charter school. But no, they want a voucher for their property taxes to pay for admission to private school.
This will reduce funding for public schools, which are already underfunded .
We will have a class system for education in Texas, if our Governor gets his way

(4,003 posts)NAGA (Native American Guardian's Association) Surpassed 101,000 signatures to restore the team's original name.
Seems like the Native Americans liked the name and want it back.
Google it, I just did.

(10,493 posts)I know indefinitely that there were originally several bands of Indigenous Americans/Native Americans, mainly the Huron Band of Potawatomi, Pokagon Band of Potawatomi, along with the related Ottawa and Ojibwa living in this surrounding area.
They were forced off their land to walk the Trail of Death so if there's any future lineage that came back to their original land, I have no idea.
Although, I also googled and I found that there are in fact Indigenous Americans /Native Americans that were surveyed and were in fact offended by the Redskins team name.
Obviously, people will never agree with each other and not everyone has the same thoughts or opinions.
