https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/nov/09/netanyahu-rejected-ceasefire-for-hostages-deal-in-gaza-sources-sayBenjamin Netanyahu rejected a deal for a five-day ceasefire with Palestinian militant groups in Gaza in return for the release of some of the hostages held in the territory, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.
The sources said the Israeli prime minister rejected the deal outright in early negotiations after militants from Hamas staged an unprecedented incursion into Israeli territory on 7 October, killing an estimated 1,400 people.
Negotiations resumed after the launch of the Israeli ground offensive on 27 October, but the same sources said Netanyahu has continued to take a tough line on proposals involving ceasefires of different durations in exchange for a varying number of hostages.
Others indicated that negotiations which took place prior to the ground invasion involved a far larger number of hostages, with Hamas proposing the release of dozens of foreign nationals captive in Gaza.

(12,744 posts)Are they not able to just release them?
Seems like that would be a show of good faith. Or is taking hostages considered acceptable by the anti-Israel crowd now?

I feel like Hamas could stop Palestinians dying by giving up all the hostages and surrendering.

(17,757 posts)It is hard for me to believe that so many "progressives" are perfectly to accept all of the killing and put all blame for the problems of the last 50 years on just one side. I will never accept the deaths of thosands of chidren in a pissing contest between Hamas and Israel.

(1,264 posts)Today's morning news has a mention of Hamas locating their command headquarters underground beneath a HOSPITAL!
Doesn't seem they are all that concerned about the collateral damage of the general population left above ground. Hard to have sympathy for those who started this shitshow, than run and hide.
That being said, past Israeli policies led to this situation.

Enough people have died and it is time to talk. You can't talk when bombs are falling.

You and I cannot stop that from happening.
What can and should happen os the returning of the hostages.

(46,142 posts)From the article, it sounds like Hamas was offering only to release "foreign nationals". There is no way Netanyahu can accept a deal that leaves Israelis being held hostage.

(2,020 posts)I do not blame Israel for not trusting Hamas to keep their word. I do not blame them for thinking Hamas will drag things out and want to exchange 2 hostages here, 3 hostages a few weeks later, all while Hamas uses breaks in fighting to regroup and resupply. Hamas needs to release the hostages. The people of Gaza are only getting hungrier, thirstier and more desperate. If Hamas isn't serious about releasing hostages, like releasing 100 of them for a temporary ceasefire, then it only makes sense for Israel to keep going with their offensive and get into the tunnels and take Hamas out. Delaying things only hurts the innocent civilians of Gaza, who need food, water, and hospital access, and Hamas is counting on that and wants the PR machine to turn on Israel and so of course thier strategy is to drag this process out as much as possible. Israel is smart to just go in and take them out.

(13,985 posts)They are sub-animals. Anyone supporting Hamas is a waste of food. The Palestinians should have a state, but that state can't harbor terrorists.
Hamas has helped expose evil. They showed us who should be removed from Earth (them). They showed us who should be stripped of citizenship in any country opposed to terrorism and deported or imprisoned (their supporters).

(17,757 posts)In return Israel attacks all of the Palestinian people and that is no better than Hamas. The equivalent would be if someone in your neighborhood committed, murder then the police come and destroy the whole neighborhood; men women and children to make sure to get the killer and then call it "justice."
