I'm sure the cartoonist meant well but the stereotype Mexican is appalling.

or, if the cartoonist felt it essential, a swarthy skinned man in tatters would probably have done duty.

Consider the stereotypical depictions of African Americans that used to be used in cartoons, would you have then asked, "Tell me, just how is an African American suppose to be depicted in a cartoon?"
