Bring back the Expanded Child Tax Credit

In 2021, the expansion of the child tax credit led to a historic 46 percent decline in the U.S. child poverty rate. With the Republicans in Congress forcing an end to the expansion the next year the rate of child poverty has jumped from 5.2 percent to 12.4 percent, forcing over 3,000,000 children in the United States into poverty. The child tax credit impacted more than 61 million children in the United States. The problem with the way Republicans have changed the tax credit since 2021 is that the people who need the help the most don’t get it. The hole is because you have to make a certain amount of money to qualify now for the tax credit. A two-parent, two-child household needs to earn at least $36,000 a year to qualify for the full benefit. As a result, many of the kids who need help the most don’t qualify. Literally, tens of millions of children can’t benefit because their families don’t earn enough money. How messed up is this?
