"A tinker, a tailor, a soldier's things"

I joined DU 17 years ago. I was in a much different place then than I am now. I was at the time more or less homeless (and in fact technically homeless for the next 6 months) A lot has changed since then. I'm doing much much better. In fact I'm blessed enough to be the DJ at the Marine Corps Birthday Ball at the US Embassy in Sri Lanka tomorrow. I'm very happy about this.
Overseas posts often can't do the Marine Corps birthday on the actual date (Nov. 10) but have to defer to when venues are available locally. So here we are.
I'll be both the DJ and the oldest Marine, so I have to actually wear my medals for once. They aren't much. But I earned them.
Anyways, I hope everybody at DU is well, and I hope you'll join me in a belated happy birthday to the Corps.

Sorry, Navy here, you know how we are.
Seriously, thanks for sharing your story. My Grandson joined the Marine Corps a year ago, and I could not be prouder.

Speaking of being old, I was the oldest Army junior O-3 in Iraq in '08 (I went to Chaplain basic training at 51, with no prior service), which was a bit weird. For that matter, I was actually older than most other Officers, except the O-8 Commander (who was five months older than me) and a couple of physicians (who were O-6s). By and large, the Officers who were younger than me and outranked me, treated me as if I were a kid, and the other O-3s treated me as "grandpa". Good times.
Enjoy your party!!

(6,001 posts)My grandmother was one of the first female Marines. She died a year ago and was given full military honors at her funeral. I ran the Marine Corps Marathon a few weeks ago in her honor. At Mile 12-13 they have placards with the pictures, names and ages of every Marine killed in service in the history of the Marines. It is a very somber mile to run. People were crying as they ran. So many bright young people killed.
