having a hard time. I keep coming up with Democratic First Ladies. Funny that!

(1,992 posts)She openly discussed breast cancer while First Lady and brought cancer out of the shadows. For many, prior to her openly discussing cancer, cancer was a dirty secret not to be openly discussed. She later did the same with addiction, particularly for females who were very much under served in addiction treatment. She is by far the best GOP first lady.

(3,891 posts)Her work as first lady focused on promoting literacy, but she was also an advocate for AIDS patients, not surprising considering her religious background in ultra-liberal Christian churches and was pro-choice in spite of her husband having to reluctantly accept a pro-life position as a GOP nominee.
I would not rank her ahead of Rosalyn Carter in this regard, but for a Republican, not bad.
Barbara Bush was very involved with leukemia and lymphoma awareness, and did at least one PSA about organ donation or bone marrow transplantation (one of those two). As a librarian, Laura Bush was very hands on with the libraries and other charities having to do with literacy.
