Fox News host's '$90 Turkey' claim mocked as prices plunge in 'Thanksgiving miracle'

A Fox News host’s claim he spent $90 on a Thanksgiving turkey is getting tremendous pushback and mockery as economists note the price of turkeys, gas, airplane travel, and even complete Thanksgiving Day dinners have all dropped in what one jovially declared a “Thanksgiving miracle.”

“We went to go buy a turkey today — it was $90 for a turkey,” former Republican U.S. Congressman turned Fox News host Jason Chaffetz said Monday (video below).”The price of stamps is up 32% in the last four years. But it’s all a choice by Joe Biden. That is what Bidenomics is.”

Chaffetz was roundly mocked, with many posting ads from their local grocers showing the price of turkeys this Thanksgiving, which CNBC and others report is actually lower than last year. “On average, Americans can expect to pay $35.40 for a 15-pound turkey this year — an average of $2.36 per pound,” FinanceBuzz reports. “At more than $50 per bird ($52.85), Hawaii has the highest average turkey prices of all the states. In the contiguous U.S., Minnesota and California tie for the highest average price at $41.85.”

“Almost everything on the Thanksgiving menu is lower – prices for cranberries have dropped 18%,” CNBC reports. “But the main reason for the decrease is due to the star of the show — the turkey. This year, a 16-pound turkey is averaging $27.35, down 5.6% from a year ago.”

Inflation dropped from 9.1% annually in June of last year to 3.2% annually last month — inflation in the month of October was zero.

The answer(s) to this question strikes at the heart of our defective fascist-sympathizing news media's lack of journalistic standards. Unfortunately, this fabrication will lead to little-or-no lasting egg on the face of the obvious liar, rather now hundreds of thousands are re-informed of and reinforced in their convictions regarding the "terrible" economy caused solely by the Biden administration.

There are places where wealthy, but not very bright, people can shop and be taken in by a lot of promises about birds being raised organically and humanely. If you want to pay $90 for a turkey, there are people who will oblige. But that doesn't mean everybody ends up paying that ridiculous price.

Total bill, $103.22 I already have my turkey, it's 13LBS and was 17.96 from the same store.

But my stepsister in TX was telling me what her holiday shopping deals were. The local HEB has an 18lb regular turkey for $18. Plus, they have a coupon to get a free spiral-sliced ham with that turkey. For the lazy or busy or just plain bad cooks, HEB *also* has a pre-stuffed 11lb turkey for $33. Just put it in ye olde oven and bake away.

I checked HEB's high-end sister site, Central Market, and they have a pre-smoked gourmet turkey for $75. To hit $90, you have to get a ~15 lb Diestel 'gourmet heirloom' fresh turkey. The stepsister says not no but hell no will she spend that on something that will get wiped out in less than an hour. They're going with the $18 18lb bird with the ham for the (Tex-Mex) family gathering she's hosting.

These are fresh birds from local farms and they claim they were raised humanely and fed organically.

So they aren't your typical retail birds.

If the ex congress critter is shopping at a white glove Manhattan butcher, than I'm not surprised by a hefty price tag.

You can find gourmet foods in most major cities, and they usually aren't cheap.

The trick is realizing they aren't cheap, and that not everyone pays $5/lb+ for a turkey.

anyone paying triple price for vegetarian-fed turkeys is getting ripped off. All meat, poultry, and dairy sold in the USA is free of antibiotics.

Average Americans would know the prices for normal turkeys at their local store if they ever stepped inside one.

All meat, poultry and dairy foods sold in the U.S. are free of antibiotic residues, as required by federal law — whether or not the food is labeled "antibiotic free".

Sometimes I just shake my head....

The retail price of Turkey's is the worse possible commodity to try to use as an indicator of the (current) economy. Turkey's are a loss leader. Retailers heavily discount to lure you into the store.

Other considerations are a lot of turkeys are processed months and months before November. How much inventory built up depends on a lot of factors such as the cost of cold storage, variables in transportation, and variables in holding costs/interest/inflation.

Then of course, is not all turkeys are the same (such as the free-range, organic, pumped full of drugs, and other things).

I hate it when those throwing shit at the wall comes up with nonsensical crap.

We're not extravagant people by any means, but with all meat purchases, even the annual gobbler, my wife insists on us spending extra for meat that's humanely raised. So, a $90 bird is entirely realistic.

even in the same geographical area. In my area near San Francisco, turkeys range from about $10 for a small frozen bird (about $1/lb) to fresh pasture-raised heirloom breeds in the If-you-have-to-ask-you-can't-afford-it range. $5-6/lb seems to be the going rate for a plain "free-range" turkey from mid-sized producers, so an 18 pound bird would be $90.

If he's buying a 22 pound turkey so he's feeding a crowd. Exactly how cheap does he think it's supposed to be?

First time We've seen it at that price in a couple years.

Kroger also has regular turkeys for $.49/lb when you buy $25 worth of groceries (no problem there). I guess you can get a turkey there for 90 bucks if you can find one that weighs 180 pounds.

Seriously, the basic bird at my store is .99/lb, with a $25 extra purchase. Sides, bubbly, drinks, basic shopping, whatever, take care of the $25.

But then, he is, and always has been, an idiot.

Chaffetz lives in Manhattan, right?

The NYC supermarket chain Gristedes has three turkeys on offer on their webpage:

Shady Brook Farms frozen turkeys $3.29 per pound
Butterball frozen turkeys $4.29 per pound
Organic fresh turkeys $7.69 per pound

A 21-pound Butterball or a 12-pound fresh organic turkey would cost you $90.

This is not because Joe Biden is president.
This is because Gristedes is expensive as fuck.

They also have:

Chunk White Albacore Bumble Bee Tuna $4.09 per five ounce can
Regular size can Del Monte tomato sauce $1.59
Pearl Milling Co. 32 ounce pancake mix $7.59
Box of eight Pop-Tarts $7.19
28 ounce jar Skippy peanut butter $9.59
Packet McCormick chicken gravy mix $3.29
40 ounce bottle Mazola corn oil $10.79
18 ounce loaf utility-grade bread $5.09
30 ounce jar Hellman's mayo $14.29

He paid $6/lb.? Then he's a moron.
Or, he bought 3 turkeys and didn't realize 3 costs more than one. Which would name him a moron.
Or, he's lying. Which makes him a lying moron. (The moron part is a given.)

myself, checking all the tags to get the largest birds ( if I am going to all that trouble, there better be LOTS of leftovers). As I am checking, one tag appears to read $0.05. I looked again, certain that I had somehow misread it. No. .It actually read $0.05. Somehow, the price per pound was put in as $0.0023/pound. I quickly checked through the bin, it was the only one mismarked. The cashier blanched when I pointed out that they had to give it to me for that price. I watched in amusement as another employee went running back. I did, however, point out that they should probably check their signs, as one of them read, simply, "organic whole fresh turkey $1.79. Not per pound, just $1.79. Oh, the fun I could have had.

My friend's church was very grateful.

78. There are places beyond the limits of North America

Since turkeys are not native to Europe, they have to be raised on special farms here. To prevent disease breakouts, and not use dangerous additives, strict rules apply about how they can be grown here. We are having about 20 people over, so we have ordered a 15 kilogram (about 33 pounds) turkey. It is going to cost us between €90 and €100, or between $100 and $110, or a little over $3 per pound.

In North America, where turkeys ARE native, and don‘t have to undergo scrutiny as foreign poultry, it will cost far less to raise them, and I hear regulations are loose when it comes to what additives are allowed. So, it is to be expected that most of you don‘t have to pay anywhere near what we do. Still, we feel better about what‘s in the meat we eat here than we do about much of what is offered in the USA (don‘t know what rules apply in Canada).

As for Fox Noise, while their $90 turkey might be accurate if it was a 30 pound bird in the German Rheinland, I rather imagine they were looking for an inflation story, and decided (apparently as usual) to make one up when reality didn‘t suit their narrative.
