CNN's Christiane Amanpour asked former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak about whether he misspoke when, during this interview, he said that bunkers under the Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza were built by Israeli engineers. Barak responds that he didn't misspeak. Amanpour replies: "Okay. That's sort of thrown me a little bit."

Senior Hamas officials in Gaza are hiding out in a "bunker" built by Israel, intelligence officials suspect: Many are believed to be in the basements of the Shifa Hospital complex in Gaza City, which was refurbished during Israel's occupation of the Gaza Strip.

Because every government lies. Tells half-truths. Misleads. Omits... Israel is not and never has been an exception. Neither is the US.
What is going to happen is that the public is going to learn that western media has been credulously, or lazily, or cynically, or manipulatively, repeating those lies as truths.

Ehud Barak was talking about a basement and called it a bunker
or it was a basement turned into a bunker. Shit gets lost in translation.
Sam Seder has always been a self-loathing Jew. And the woman sitting next to him is an idiot: Lots of hospitals have underground tunnels. JFC.

The idea that one of Hamas main command bunkers is located beneath Shifa Hospital in Gaza City is one of the worst-kept secrets of the Gaza war. So why arent reporters in Gaza ferreting it out? The precise location of a large underground bunker equipped with sophisticated communications equipment and housing some part of the leadership of a major terrorist organization beneath a major hospital would seem to qualify as a world-class scoopthe kind that might merit a Pulitzer, or at least a Polk.
So why isnt the fact that Hamas uses Shifa Hospital as a command post making headlines? In part, its because the location is so un-secret that Hamas regularly meets with reporters there. On July 15, for example, William Booth of the Washington Post wrote that the hospital has become a de facto headquarters for Hamas leaders, who can be seen in the hallways and offices. Back in 2006, PBS even aired a documentary showing how gunmen roam the halls of the hospital, intimidate the staff, and deny them access to protected locations within the buildingwhere the camera crew was obviously prohibited from filming. Yet the confirmation that Hamas is using Gaza Citys biggest hospital as its de facto headquarters was made in the last sentence of the eighth paragraph of Booths storywhich would appear to be the kind of rookie mistake that is known in journalistic parlance as burying the lede.
The Israelis are so sure about the location of the Hamas bunker, however, not because they are trying to score propaganda points, or because it has been repeatedly mentioned in passing by Western reportersbut because they built it.
Back in 1983, when Israel still ruled Gaza, they built a secure underground operating room and tunnel network beneath Shifa hospitalwhich is one among several reasons why Israeli security sources are so sure that there is a main Hamas command bunker in or around the large cement basement beneath the area of Building 2 of the Hospital, which reporters are obviously prohibited from entering.

lapucelle
(21,061 posts)Is that what Sam is slandering Israel about? Sam thinks that if there are bunkers then that means there are no tunnels?
The Israel Defense Forces published two images, one showing the open door and the other further inside the tunnel.
Earlier this week, the IDF released footage showing the inside of the tunnel shaft and part of the tunnel. After around 55 meters, the tunnel ended with a blast door, likely protecting Hamas assets below ground.

(13,283 posts)It is common knowledge that Israel undertook a major renovation of the Al Shifa hospital in the 1980s:
A significant chapter in Al-Shifa's history unfolded in the 1980s when the hospital underwent a major renovation and expansion project under Israeli administration.
Designed by Israeli architects Gershon Tzapor and Benjamin Edelson, the project aimed to improve living conditions for Gaza residents and foster mutual existence between Jews and Arabs.
https://www.msn.com/en-in/news/world/the-al-shifa-hospital-and-its-history-of-conflict-explained-for-dummies/ar-AA1k1S7q
The Al Shifa you see today was built by Israel. It is natural that Ehud Barak would credit underground structures of the hospital to Israel, and it is inexplicable why Amanpour would be so surprised by this "revelation"
What Hamas did to the underground parts of the hospital in the nearly twenty years after Israel left Gaza is a whole separate question.

Think. Again.
(22,456 posts)...it's good to see the tunnels or bunkers or whatever, that hold the secret location of hamas' "headquarters" or "command centers" or whatever, have been discovered, breached, and are now occupied by Israel (with pictures!), as well as giving Israel access to whatever other hamas locations the tunnels lead to.
This should be the end of the Palestinian civilian deaths now that Israel has captured this infrastructure they were constantly saying was so important to hamas.
