If your family is like mine, there's a good chance you'll be treated to some rather large portions of cognitive dissonance and logical fallacies along with your dinner. The only advice I have is to smile and laugh at it. Get yourself through the meal. Don't let stress affect your digestion.
Happy Thanksgiving! And let's hope next year we'll be giving thanks for defeating this MAGA madness.

(5,838 posts)I have one MAGA friend left. He has learned that I am verbally quick and he should NEVER give me an opening. I have learned that instead of punching with my words, I now just LMAO at him. He has learned to keep his MAGA mouth shut around me. Thankfully, everyone else is a faithful and flaming total West Coast, Left Wing liberal. We collectively wish the earth to open and swallow TFG.

(4,716 posts)They are MAGA. The last time we were together his father in law tried to pull us into a political discussion.
My husband is always ready to argue. I interrupted by saying "This is a family event, there will be NO political discussions!"
We bowed out gracefully for Thanksgiving this year and will have an intimate dinner instead , inviting a friend who is single and would otherwise be alone.

(15,402 posts)Thanksgiving was never political, except for the times my immigrant Grand-Pappy would teasingly bring up the John Birch Society just to hear my Dad's glorious rants against them.
Grand-Pappy (from Finland as a toddler in 1895, speaking fluent Finnish, Russian, and Swedish as well as english) taught himself Spanish (and Mexican slang) and Armenian to help new naturalized citizens in his Central Los Angeles community area with taxes and insurance/inheritance issues pro bono, and had rambunctious "dealings" with the local John Birchers and Know-Nothings all the time, up until he died at the age of 99.
Those are the types of Thanksgivings I remember.

I say push back strongly on their racist ass bullshit, right to their face...right in front of great-grandma. Hell, I am not against shoving their face in the mashed potatoes if they spew their Nazi crap.
Decorum went out the door for me the minute they supported the Netherworld Ken Doll that comes in the Nazi SS Barbie set.

Several family members were hospitalized with covid over the past couple of years, so when we invite, we stipulate that everyone attending must be vaccinated. Puts the burden of excluding themselves right where it belongs: on themselves.

(34,189 posts)In response, I ordered a LeVar Burton "Read Banned Books" tee shirt to wear tomorrow.
I don't talk to that SIL - she became a rabid right wing "Christian" in college (which shocked her liberal, Unitarian family) and married a man she met through the military version of the campus organization that converted her. They have become more and more conservative over the years and voted for Trump twice each.
When their staunchly Unitarian mother died, SIL arranged for the memorial to be held at her church, completely ignoring the fact that her mother had never set foot in the place and would not have wanted to have anything to do with it.
I've told my husband that I will never go to any family get together at their house again. I will be the bare minimum of polite, but avoid interacting with them or their children.

This year, I suspect there will instead be extended attempts to convince the 'kid's table' that they need not worry about Biden's age, and to VOTE anyway even if they are concerned. The 'other choice' is likely going to lead to them never being able to vote again.
Happy Thanksgiving to all you great DUers!

(11,852 posts)Instead of having one dinner as a whole, there are now two separate dinners and gatherings for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. One for the MAGA and one for the Democratic. There's a younger couple that attends both even though they're Democratic.
I had to listen to someone shout politics during our previous events and I started pushing back. That fact that I pushed back didn't sit well with them so now we don't receive invites and we host our holiday dinners and gatherings.
Less stress all around for everyone.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours, Ohioboy.

I'm sure it's gotten worse since they were already in that cult rabbit hole, luckily we don't have to listen to it anymore.
I'm sorry that you lost two longtime friends due to the cult, Kimbutgar.

(15,675 posts)And always when I'm trying to slip into a food coma on the couch.
My brother-in-law's stepdad is a holy roller (looks like a smarmy televangelist), and he literally just came up to me once and challenged me on something Obama did. I don't remember exactly what it was, but thanks to DU, I had read all about it so I fast-talked him (didn't give him a chance to respond) through what it really was and the conservative media misrepresentation of it and the obvious ways their interpretation was nonsense. His smug smile quickly disappeared, and he especially didn't like that I ended it with, "Any questions?" He walked off to complain to my equally-as-conservative-as-he-is sister about me in the kitchen, and I could hear her telling him it was his own fault for challenging me.
Another time, they actually brought up abortion while I was trying to feign that I was asleep, but my then nephew-in-law (who's an asshole) tried to rope me into it, and I responded with, "Really? We're going to do the whole bring up politics thing at Thanksgiving thing? Do you really think that's a good idea?" Entire family - except him - laughed, and they moved on.

(11,142 posts)And, you can do it the way I did, which is to not own a car and move a few hours away in a direction that is devoid of relatives. Then, you don't have to worry about it, as the suggestion of "Well, you could drive down and get me." usually shuts down any talk of attendance.
