Melania among first ladies invited to Rosalynn's funeral

By MARTHA ROSS | Bay Area News Group
PUBLISHED: November 23, 2023 at 10:07 a.m.
UPDATED: November 23, 2023 at 8:21 p.m.

... The Washington Post has reported that Melania Trump has been invited to the service for Rosalynn Carter in Plains, Georgia, next Wednesday. Rosalynn Carter died at her home in Plains, Georgia, Sunday at the age of 96, two days after she entered hospice care. Jimmy Carter, her husband of 77 years, was by her side, the Washington Post said.

As the Carter family is preparing for Rosalynn Carter’s funeral, they are keeping in mind that she was a member of a unique group of women: presidential first ladies. All first ladies have been invited to the service, the Washington Post said. This means the world could see Melania Trump at the same event as Jill Biden, Michelle Obama, Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton.

Perhaps all five women could sit together in the same pew at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia, though Jill Biden may sit with her husband, Joe Biden, who also has been invited ...

It would be monumental to see Melania Trump sitting near Jill Biden. The former model notoriously broke a nearly 70-year tradition and didn’t invite Jill Biden, as the incoming first lady, to “a tea and tour” of the White House after her husband defeated Trump in the 2020 election ...

Actually, it’s worthy counsel to us all. That it’s not about YOU. It’s not about ourselves. It’s about the greater good. To be all about service to others. To be humble and helpful. It’s about The Work. “Be a Rosalynn” sounds like a reminder to stay loyal, loving, supportive, magnificent, towering, charitable, kind, honorable, generous, and selfless. Be an example to others about all that’s good.

“Be a Rosalynn.”

a giant orange shitstain smear whenever I look at an American Flag these days, but that doesn't mean we didn't let it happen. That's a shitstain we all have to bare.

It's part of our shameful history now, just like slavery, Jim Crow and the current Confederate America Supreme Court majority. The Confederate philosophy of Christo-fascism may have lost the Civil War, but at least they won the Supreme Court.

Does it suck that Donnie Dipshit was ever President? Sure, but our "friends", family members, co-workers, neighbors and fellow parishioners voted to make that happen.

Barbara Bush also was critical of Trump, CNN reported, saying during his 2016 campaign: “He sort of makes faces and says insulting things. He’s said terrible things about women, terrible things about the military. I don’t understand why people are for him, for that reason.”

We know he holds grudges, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if he was still sulking about that when Mrs. Bush died and snubbed her funeral for that reason.

Fri Nov 24, 2023, 02:59 AM
Nov 2023

People can disagree with the Carter's beliefs on subjects. What they can't do is claim that they EVER (through their entire lives) didn't do what they believe is the correct and moral thing to do.

And "claim" is put in quotes for one specific reason. I do see some broad brushed Christian bashing here.

Full disclosure, I am not a self described Christian, but I have some friends that are Christians in the Carter mode. Great people, they walk the talk, far from judgmental. Are they in the minority of Christians I know, YES! But I sure as hell am not going to condemn people who live by the teaching of the Beatitudes, teach their children the same and are not very judgmental.

As a side note; during W's second term I spent a night during W's second term putting a spreadsheet together ranking all Presidents since Kennedy on the Economy. Basically took 14 or 15 key financial indicators (job growth, unemployment rates, stock market growth, deficit, etc.) equal rating on all of the metrics. Graded on a curve, and Carter came in last among Dems, but was a C overall because Repukes filled the lower positions. Barely above him was Reagan.

I guarantee you if the same exercise was run today, Carter would still be a C. Only due to Biden taking the top spot and Obama being in the top three of four, with tRUMP taking the solid F spot.

And I am not a religious person but try to be a good person.

The point I was trying to make, there are religious people that are good, moral souls.

The Carter's being exhibit A.

We shouldn't critique (broad brush was the post I recall) people due to their religious beliefs, IF!!!!, they use their religious beliefs to try to make their corner of the World a better place.

My lifetime of experiences has shown be there are many people who claim to be religious, but in reality, they are complete immoral assholes. And these people aren't just Christians, they are a part of every religion.

All of us have also seen atrocities done under the cover of religion that are highly immoral.

Push comes to shove, I would claim we are all living in Heaven now, this beautiful planet (except for Texas, I KID, partially) was some how gifted to us to build upon, make better.

So if a person professes to be a Christian AND shows the aptitude to make this place better, I have zero issues calling that person a Brother or Sister.

The majority of 'Good People' I have encountered are not religious. BUT, there are good religious people.

Does that help?

Edit to add: I am not in the league with the Carters. If they are playing in the Major Leagues, I am playing Single A in Salinas.

I was originally against Carter because he was just another phony Christian.

I was wrong.

Our Mammon worshiping, political Christians have overwhelmed those few good ones.

Will it get her some points with the MAGA goons? Probably not. Will she go to emphasize that she's in the exclusive club? Will she wear an entirely inappropriate red dress to steal attention from the deceased? How can she make it about her?

even though the Trumps go low. Whether Melania attends or not, there is nothing she can do to rise to Rosalyn Carter’s level. Nothing….even if she leaves the thug home.

The Carters are/were class acts & a living example of their faith. It doesn't surprise me in the least that Melania would be invited. That being said, if Melania has a shred of class, she will politely decline. Her "husband" is a pariah and an embarrassment to the office he held.

and if invited, will he go. It would be a pretty glaring omission. Johnson didn't go to Truman's funeral but he was quite ill by that point (he died less than one month later). Not a decision I would like to be in charge of making.

more than just being around other former FLOTUSes who continued to do good works in the service of others after leaving the White House. She knows she is detested due to who she is married to.

For what has Melania Trump done to contribute to society in the manner Rosalynn Carter had done?

Unless they wanted to invite all the First Ladies. All we can do is hope the Carter family intervenes if/when things get...bad. Ever heard the phrase "a bride at every wedding and a corpse at every funeral"? That's T****, in a nutshell.

The Carter family is certainly following protocol to invite all former FLOTUSes to the funeral. That's class.

If she shows up, Melanoma will probably make it all about her or her meal ticket/target, TFG.

I am quite surprised by the low tolerance level shown for a person dragged into a situation that they may not have wanted. I don't think she ever wanted to be First Lady. Jimmy is doing the right thing. She showed she can be responsible at a previous service.
Enough hate.

I have met only a few people who remind me of the Carters. People who really live their religion and believe in true love, forgiveness and don't have a mean bone in their body.

So yes she would want her there with love in her heart with zero expectations.

It's the rest of us that hold judgment. And I admit I have judged her harshly myself.

that the Carters are better Christians (and better people) than I am. I knew that. I couldn't have done it.

But, despite a few opinions which spouted from her - those were opinions only. She really is not reaponsib'le for all the evil he did and continues to do. I'm sure she could not have stopped him from any of it no matter how hard she tried.

But I still couldn't have done it.
