(115,186 posts)Texas gives more than we receive, and the animosity doesn't win votes or persuade anyone. It's just tribalist chest-thumping and it's counterproductive
I live in Texas. We do not give more to the federal government than we receive. Our social service programs would not exist if it weren't for massive federal support.

(1,892 posts)Appreciate it friend....This venue is a bit more discerning than I'm used to. I plan to post regularly, and when I f/u I expect fellow d/u'ers to hold my feet to the fire. I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

(8,971 posts)I am certainly writing to you from my single-wide trailer in upstate NY, I am delighted by your screen name and hope to see you posting again. I rather think there are cinder blocks under my house, with hurricane straps attached to them, but they're covered by the skirting, which I intend to have neatened and braced in the spring as soon as I have saved up some money to pay the contractors. I am sure that it's unwise to stereotype trailer dwellers, since several of my neighbors are very competent people and good community members. My financial state is solvent, and I am mortgage free.
Also, in your post, I don't think you mean every resident of every red state. There are a number of African Americans living in some of those states who may have saved our a**es in recent elections. And they may be living in trailers. I think you should narrow your focus and define the group you're really annoyed with.

(38,534 posts)This was something I posted a year ago on F/B. It came up today on one of those "your memories" posts on my wall. It is too broad in scope, I agree. It's just one of those catchy memes that surface occasionally. I do not mean to offend anyone. I lived in a nice double wide back east b/4 I moved west. I am a progressive, and I spend my days advocating for progressive policies and candidates. I'm retired, and that activity plus a few hobbies are what I do. Thank you for taking the time to write to me, I appreciate it.

And then they're the first in line, pounding the doors of Congress for federal pork.

(172,852 posts)I can comment on accents - heck, someone called me out yesterday for saying "been" like BEAN instead of BIN - that's a leftover from part of my childhood spent in England. It didn't bother me at all that someone commented on it.

(23,456 posts)I grew in Mississippi, you see - and while I have many fond memories, the many idiosyncracies aren't easy to forget either.
Some of the most intelligent, humorous liberals I've ever met, were in Mi'ssippi - and it stands to reason, because they live and breathe the right-wing threat to democracy every day.
They understand it intimately - and better than most.
That said, yes - the state has that very large faction of unreconstructed confederates, who unfortunately have made some solid alliances with neo-fascists in other regions (and are quick to stamp out dissent in their own back yards - sometimes by costing you your job, sometimes worse).
Which brings us to the GOP: a veritable marriage between John Birch and Jim Crow.
About the only gay marriage they seem to approve of.

(115,186 posts)I'm a native Texan but it's not about Texas or Texans it's about bashing entire states because of the right wingers that outnumber dems in southern states.

(23,456 posts)We know Texas has grown - and a lot. They had 12 million people 50 years ago, and now have 30 million.
But that no doubt's only a small part of the story.

(23,456 posts)They've got more unsolved murders in Mi'ssippi than goosebumps on a ho' in Church.
(especially when they involve a black victim - and the poh-lice ain't too sure they wanna solve that one)

(4,739 posts)And I approve this message.
If I lived in a red state I would know you weren't talking about me, but those people who continually elect vicious republicans in those places with the lowest quality of life indicators (education, health delivery, life expectancy). Those states further alienate employers that find extreme policies such as abortion bans, and drag show bans, and book bans bad for business.
A message like this won't necessarily persuade those most thirsty for the Cruel-Aid, but aggressive messaging from a point of strength moves the wishy-washy voter and wishy-washy voters can make all the difference. "Strong on Democracy" and "Strong on governing" can overtake the false "Strong on the Economy" message that has helped buoy goppers for decades. Maga has tried to campaign unsuccessfully on inflation and gas prices for the past year and where has it gotten them?
Keep feeling your frustration with the people who insist on getting it wrong. Keep expressing yourself.

(2,317 posts)Red Montana, red North Carolina, and red Georgia, and every one of those red states is much better. Blue Virginia is great, but its only recently and barely blue. Blue New Mexico is most dependent on federal funding. Im really tired of uneducated folks badmouthing fellow Americans based on the state they live in. So anyway, bless your heart.
