Some of you may be familiar with the 8 yr old girl whose father has the touching Irish accent. She is being released according to CNN! I am so happy for her and her father!
Like many, I am concentrating on the good news to get through the daily tragedies. I hope she recovers well.

(606 posts)at the hands of Hamas, the terror she must have felt is staggering, all this on an innocent 8 year old girl take by these butchers.

(18,612 posts)but it sounds like she will be receiving extensive psychological/medical help. Nevertheless, no doubt it will be a long and difficult journey to recovery.

(3,983 posts)traumatizing to her - and all of them. So, far, the rescuers are not reporting any hostages who are in ill health. I know that psychological pain doesn't show up, but that will be healed with time.

(811 posts)This is an 8-year old girl who was having a sleepover at her neighbors home when the attacks took place. Her father was told she had been killed, but later it was determined that her and the friend and friends mother had been taken hostage and were in Gaza.
The father did a famous interview days after the attack when he said he was relieved when he was told she had been killed instead of having to endure the things that would happen in Gaza.

(18,612 posts)that she's alive although the road ahead will probably be difficult. Still, it is so much better than the alternative as long as she gets the help she needs.

(17,277 posts)I found it by typing "hillary clinton hamas" into Google, because I was so curious to know what she's been saying on this subject. I'm really glad I did!
As I said in another reply, I'm going to do an op, to bring this article to more people's attention.

(12,803 posts)#2 that a cease fire (as distinct from a brief humanitarian pause) is a ploy that Hamas has cynically used to everyone elses detriment over and over and which should not be repeated.

(17,277 posts)It's an opinion piece that she wrote herself, and I think it will give you a much more nuanced picture of her thinking on the Israel/Hamas issue.
She lays out everything she thinks Israel needs to do; and yes, "eliminate Hamas" is on the list, but that's just the tip of the iceberg. She has a whole bunch of recommendations, some of which I'm sure Israel won't be thrilled with, and I think she's right about all of it.
Perhaps most importantly, she explains her reasoning for everything she recommends, and she's very clear about certain things Israel has been doing that need to stop.
As for her being "callous" about Hamas, she's very clear about exactly what they've done to deserve just that. They are terrorists who have deliberately put the Palestinian people in Gaza in harm's way again and again. High death tolls in Gaza are regarded as a "win" by them, because it causes negative attention to be focused on Israel instead of on themselves.

The quality of Hillary's writing made it easy. That woman really knows how to express her thoughts clearly.

(17,277 posts)I'm getting to do an op about this article. I think it needs to be spread far and wide. I hate the way DU is being rolled by this issue right now. Maybe this will help a little.
Think. Again.
(12,564 posts)Going forward, Israel needs a new strategy and new leadership. Instead of the current ultra-right-wing government, it will need a government of national unity thats rooted in the center of Israeli politics and can make the hard choices ahead. At home, it will have to reaffirm Israeli democracy after a tumultuous period. In Gaza, it should resist the urge to reoccupy the territory after the war, accept an internationally mandated interim administration for governing the Strip, and support regional efforts to reform and revive the Palestinian Authority so it has the credibility and the means to reassume control of Gaza. In the West Bank, it must clamp down on the violence perpetrated by extremist Israeli settlers and stop building new settlements that make it harder to imagine a future Palestinian state. Ultimately, the only way to ensure Israels future as a secure, democratic, Jewish state is by achieving two states for two peoples. And in the region, Israel should resume serious negotiations with Saudi Arabia and others to normalize relations and build a broad coalition to counter Iran.
For now, Israel should focus on freeing the hostages, increasing humanitarian aid, protecting civilians, and ensuring that Hamas terrorists can no longer murder families, abduct children, exploit civilians as human shields, or start new wars. But when the guns fall silent, the hard work of peace building must begin. There is no other choice.

(1,867 posts)... who at first was relieved that she was dead and not suffering. So of course, I'm very happy that she's alive and free.
But remember-- because the agreement was for a set number of people, for each person released today, someone else had to remain behind in Hamas's evil grip. This is the depravity of Hamas.
