The onstage chaos seemingly ignited six songs into the bands set by frontman Anton Newcombe, 56, who then abruptly kicked out guitarist Ryan Van Kriedt from the band, demanding his microphone be cut off and for him to get the fk off stage.
Cut off this guys mic, put down my guitar, partys over, captain, Newcombe shouted at his then-guitarist in a fan-filmed social media video.
Theres no more music until you get the fk We actually dont need you. Go. Put my guitar down on the stage and think about whats happening. Unplug.
Van Kriedt told him he better think about this one, man, adamantly adding, because this is forever, making sure Newcombe understood the gravity of his demand.
Fed up with the onstage antics, Van Kriedt stormed off stage and flipped the irate lead singer as he exited.
In a shocking twist, concertgoers watched as Newsome took his guitar and swung it at Van Kriedts head, appearing to strike him in the face.
The guitarist then chases Newcombe across the stage as he flees before tackling him to the ground.

(108,782 posts)Holy shit, that might be one of the most spectacularly bad band breakups of all time.

(4,741 posts)Sonic Youth was no picnic. Married band members divorcing over adultery allegations, and then it spilled over into the band. It got really nasty there, really fast.
And let's not even get into how Eddie Van Halen was central to not one but two implosions of his namesake band. They never recovered from the second one.

(108,782 posts)Geoff Tate got drunk off his ass before a show and threatened to fight the rest of the band. Then he quit and they wound up canceling the rest of the tour. Then he released an album under the Queensryche name without the approval of the other band members called Frequency Unknown (read: FU). Then he attempted to sue for control of the Queensryche name and wound up splitting the band into two different bands called Queensryche. After that failed, he went solo and then dropped off the face of the earth. It is a very weird tale.

(12,744 posts)His voice was shot the last time I saw 'Ryche so I'm not that interested in seeing him solo. Queensryche hasn't been the same since Chris DeGarmo left in the early 90s though.

(108,782 posts)I haven't seen Queensryche with LaTorre yet but I'm thinking I might catch their show at the House Of Blues in March when they play The Warning in its' entirety.

(87 posts)The Van Halen breakups were complex, but the first one was driven by DLR, not EVH. DLR quit the band because he wanted to be a movie star. That being said, Van Halen was always professional on stage. There's no comparison here.

(2,710 posts)who worked with a band years ago I can agree wholeheartedly. The combination of the eccentricity, talent, creativity, insecurity, ego, exhaustion and frustration when you're out on the road gives all the fuel necessary for these things to combust. I saw people who after a few weeks couldn't stand to eat a meal with each other. I can remember plenty of screaming matches in the motel rooms at the end of the night. I'm a laid back sort and I don't like people shouting and arguing. It's too much like marriage. I spent many an early morning from 3:00 a.m. until about 6:00 a.m. sitting out in back of a motel by myself just to get away from it and not hear it.

(76,700 posts)...of the fact that my last band stayed together for 19 years with the same 4 guys, plus the same soundman & light tech.
Over 1,500 gigs together & nothing close to this ever occurred.
In addition, what the hell was that unprofessional behavior before the "fight"? Meandering around the stage, noodling, for 5 minutes, hardly acknowledging the audience, extra guys on stage... For five minutes.
I'm surprised they had fans to attend the show.

(23,631 posts)This is their schtick, theyve been doing it for the last thirty years and its part of the reason people go to see them, to see if theyll fight on stage. The band is really just the lead singer plus revolving support musicians that he abuses, fights with, and then fires. Its pretty much the only reason theyre semi-famous.

(12,744 posts)May have been the last time they toured the States. Mark E Smith was yelling at the opening act throughout their set, then the opening singer threw a banana peel or something on stage at Smith. He stopped the show, went outside and fought the opener's singer, and ended up firing the rest of his band and cancelling the tour.

(76,700 posts)Even Skynyrd would have been the same with 2 guitar players. But, at least they had 3 guys with very different styles.
With 3, one of them has to spend all their time staying out of the way.
For a jam, sure. Geez, we've had 4 up there at once when hosting a jam.
Know what it sounds like? A jam!

(76,700 posts)But, harp is a fun instrument.
I learned how to play it as a kid at the piano shop where I took lessons.
Then, in high school I had a neighbor that had one. (More on that later*.) In college, I'd go to the music hall when I didn't have time to drive home & back to play piano, but messed around on harp several times.
* - Musical family. Dad was baritone horn player for the Lyric Opera orchestra, mom was a classical pianist, the son became a violinist with CSO, & the daughter was a harpist who, at least at one point, played with the orchestra in Dallas. Super musical family.

(4,741 posts)Was a professional roadie. He worked the last Police tour in 1984, and came back saying the band was done, he couldn't see them doing anything together again, because they were having quite bad fights. I don't remember anymore if a fight happened onstage or not, but bad fights among them were definitely happening.
I'd say his prediction was correct, because they didn't release another album together. I understand that things settled down enough for them to do a reunion tour in the mid-2000s. So bands can come back from bad blood...If they're popular enough. I'm guessing that bands less well-known don't tend to kiss and make up.
