On this day is a thing for many here, I get it, but for those who skip over it I think a little bit of humor is in order.
I was 4 years old and decided to go after the mean banty rooster with a yard stick. Off I go and when I get close to the rooster he starts chasing me and I start running, and yeah, fall down, and he pecks me. So I was still a tattler back then, I tell grandma all about it. She says tell grandpa, which I do. He says then we will cut off his head, do you want to hold the feet or the head? Since the rooster just clawed me with his feet I chose the head. Holding near the head grandpa cuts it off and the rooster flies quite a way without his head. Grandpa then puts his fingers in the roosters head and makes the mouth open and close which scared the bejeesus out of me.
I then had to help grandma pluck the rooster which was another awful sight. When we were done the water was pitch black. (roosters/chickens are dirty birds)
After that adventure 72 years ago I would not eat chicken for 20 years, and that's the way it happened 72 years ago.😊

(12,412 posts)rabbits and chickens they raised kept disappearing. Food was good.
Enjoyed your story.

(4,135 posts)IS a thing. Run, flop, flip, jump. I found it's better to skin them out, and cook them skinless, than messing around with the feathers. Cleanup afterwards is easier, too.

(6,675 posts)watching them run around headless gave me nightmares (literally) and I couldn't eat chicken for years. Still not a favorite.

(4,584 posts)The head off of chicken. I was about six or so. I can still see and hear to this day the sound of that poor chicken.
I don't remember whether they had package chicken back then, I just remember my grandparents saying if you bought a whole chicken like that it was cheaper and fresher.
