Who wore black.
That said, she must be having an inner fit standing next to Michelle Obama!

And if people believe she's not wearing black in order to draw attention, simply don't give her any.

(28,353 posts)To me the most offensive thing is that she looks like she wants it known that she doesn't want to be there. Attending in a coat says "I have no intention to stay one moment longer than I am required to." It's what my sister did at my daughter's December wedding despite being in a crowded, perfectly warm church and then a crowded, perfectly warm reception hall.

(48,738 posts)Yes it is very unflattering but probably cost a fortune.
The coat is very tight and too small on top, the skirt is way too big.
This is a woman who buys custom couture. And can hire a seamstress.
And she considers herself a fashionista.
I don't get it.

(61,857 posts)My theory is that this outfit was chosen by committee. Maybe Trump's campaign didn't want her to wear black because it would seem she was aligned with the Carters and Democrats. So grey was chosen. Maybe the coat dress was to remind people of what she wore at Trump's inauguration. Maybe she didn't even try it on in advance. I can hear her saying who cares about the stoopid funeral...
Irish_Dem
(48,738 posts)You can see her standing towards the front of the other ladies.
More by herself.
But yes the gray was to not align with the other wives.
They are beneath her.
I am talking more about the horrible fit.
Top way too tight. Skirt too big.
Expensive outfit with poor designed and fit.

(10,204 posts)For someone who was supposedly a genius-level fashion model (whatever that means) she has a knack for picking outfits that just don't look like they fit properly. Plus, she goes in for those cinched waists that don't look good on short-torsoed and large-breasted women - they make her look squeezed into the outfit. But you can believe they cost big $$$, not to mention the costs of the hairdressers and make-up artists who travel with her.
Irish_Dem
(48,738 posts)But yes she considered herself a fashion icon.
And was angry when fashion magazines didn't put her on the cover when she was First Lady.

(48,738 posts)US politics and global events are horrific and brutal.
Sometimes we need a bit of distraction, so we have fun with GOP fashion choices.
Further, Melania sends political messages with her clothing.
So it is quite appropriate to discuss her clothing.

(65,581 posts)Looking at the pic in post 4, I don't see much to criticize here.
It's a highly respectable outfit, there's a guy 20 feet behind her with no suitcoat, a lady to her left a couple rows back wearing bright green.
There's plenty about her I don't like. This is not one of them.

(102,640 posts)especially in small rural towns (and yes, I know this is Atlanta). But, I agree that Melania is wearing a very appropriate tailored coat dress (at least it appears from the photo) and that is not at all worthy of criticism. (But, I am no fan so, that might change if warranted... )

(61,857 posts)While I have zero sympathy for her, I imagine this was a challenging wardrobe decision. Her husband is very noisily running for president on a platform that casts Democrats as demons, basically. So just her going to the funeral presents challenges for his campaign. They must have decided it was better for her to go, but not wear black. Wearing black would align her too closely with the Carters and Democrats. So it was decided that she wear a tailored grey suit.
Meanly, I'm delighted that it wasn't very becoming on someone who cares only about her looks. Meow.

(12,717 posts)There are other things to criticize her about, but I'm not sure a grey coat at a funeral for a person she doesn't know or is concerned about the associations with is one. She showed up and appears to be showing basic respect for the occasion.

I think many folks on DU are much nicer, more serious people than Melania. You give her the benefit of the doubt and I love you all for that.
Now me, I'm not very nice, or serious. I'm curious what she meant by this clothing choice. Sure, that's getting down in the muck with her, but it's mildly entertaining.

(81,649 posts)Wearing anything OTHER than black to an important, solemn, and historic event like the funeral of a former First Lady, when everybody else was wearing black with MAYBE one or two exceptions far back in the pews toward the rear of the church - it's not like she didn't know or understand the gravity of the occasion. She just wanted to stand out. And I will remember, and resent her for that selfishness, as long as I draw breath. It's NOT like she didn't know or understand the protocol required of such a gathering that would be broadcast around the world, and involving individuals and personalities known across the globe.
As a former First Lady herself, it's ABSOLUTELY NOT like she didn't - or wouldn't - know or understand. She just had to stand out, and made sure it was REALLY obvious and impossible to miss.
Did your ego get enough of a boost that day, honey?
