Dad told me several times over the last nine months that he had always thought he would outlive Mom and protect her until she passed, but that now he wasnt sure that was going to happen & that upset him,
He was there for her until the end.

(31,308 posts)and of course for him the end is near.
I knew one other couple, married for 60+ years, and thought that they would surely die one after the other because they were so close for so long. it did not quite happen that way; the wife outlived her husband by a couple years. She had by then rapidly advancing dementia, so i like to think that once she got there, it was like no time at all had passed and now they're where they've always meant to be always.

(8,877 posts)My sweet husband got me one of Carter's books for Christmas years ago. It was sad to read how he felt his church had abandoned him due to their change in attitude toward women. He wouldn't have it and it hurt him to leave for a different denomination.

(97,626 posts)He did it, he was at her side when she passed. I believe he will let go now so that he can rejoin with her.

Until? Doesn't this imply that he left before the end?
I think better wording would be "...TO the end."
Maybe it's just me.
