The big news from yesterday was proof how involved that Congressional Magats were involved in the coup to overturn our democracy.
We have more evidence now about the plot to not certify Electoral votes from several states that Joe Biden won, but to send them back to the states that were controlled by Magats.
The plan was for several coup plotting Senators like Hawley and Cruz to object to certifying several states won by Biden, then VP Pence would block the certification.
Magats didn't know if Pence was on board so they went with plan B; Pence would take a powder and the next man in line was Chuck Grassley and Grassley was more than willing to help with the coup.
Lucky for democracy, Mike Pence's son convinced his dad to do the right thing and our democracy was saved: for now.
I clicked on DU fully expecting this to be at the top of the greatest hits list. If we can't make what was revealed yesterday the top news of the day at DU then stop expecting the MSM to do it.
Rant off; no wait. Magats learned from the last coup so they won't try to overturn the election at the time of the Electoral vote count. Magat election officials in several districts in several states that Biden will have won, will claim some bogus election fraud and stop the states from certifying the election. You can bank on that happening.

(13,032 posts)In her new book, former Rep. Liz Cheney paints a scathing portrait of the Republican Party, condemning her former colleagues and party leaders as enablers and collaborators, who after the 2020 election were willing to violate their oath to the Constitution out of political expediency and loyalty to Donald Trump.
Very interesting article.

(15,426 posts)While gray is generally accepted at a funeral, black is better and light gray is a bit 'off.' There is also some nuance as it was a gray coat which she did not remove. We cannot excuse her by saying it is cultural, because in Eastern Europe, black is derigeur.
I can remember remarking on one post that at least she did not wear her "I don't care, do you?" coat. That was good...
But I have not seen one single post defending her. Why would anyone do so. I did have compassion for her because when Trumpy was elected it became clear she was far, far out of her depth in her new role as First Lady. She did lose me with the 'I don't care' label on the back of her coat, which marked her as low-class, or perhaps proletarian.
Her father was a member of the Communist party in Slovenia, and she was set to study design and engineering to serve the state when she won a modeling contest. This led to a contract with a European agency and some nude modeling. She was trying to get out of Eastern European post USSR poverty, you see.
She met Trumpy through Paolo Zampolli, who was an owner of the european modeling agency, and then moved to NYC where she continued her modeling career. She dated Trumpy and they married in '05, but apparently there was a 'lewd' interview in 1999 with Howard Stern that put her on the 'front page.'
It is sad to me, as the father of three daughters and grandfather of two girls, that Melania had to trade on her looks just to escape grinding poverty. It sickens me that women are always judged on how they look instead of on their accomplishments and abilities.
It is a sad story, and I think a nightmare for her with all that is going on now. She was never ready for the First Lady role, probably never wanted it. For me, I guess I feel sorry for her and millions of other women who do exactly what she did to try and escape hard, hard lives.

(32,323 posts)I will be going over to Stephanie Miller soon, I go to Thom Hartmann at noon, I religiously watched Nicolle Wallace but bless her, I will miss her. There are several liberal sites that I will click on, I used to subscribe to The Nation when it first came out. Daily Kos is good, several others I will click on.
I see the headlines scroll across my computer home page with right wing propaganda and I never click on them. It bugs me when The Hill gets sourced here, the rag that employed John Solomon.
This is scary shit. As far as I am concerned the vast majority of Congressional Magats are actively working to bring down our democracy. That should be splashed across MSM headlines. Who isn't involved? Mitt Romney? People who aren't involved are retiring. I don't even see where Susan Collins is concerned.

I certainly agree. Sometimes I feel that folks here are obsessing in their pet issues while the foundation of democracy is being ripped out from underneath us. My imagination might be running wild, - however Ive been wondering if all the crazy things that have been happening in Congress are a subterfuge to keep us occupied while they (republicans) are gaming the system to cheat their way into permanent power. As Beau would say, - - - Just a thought

(28,836 posts)You'll quickly find that we freak out about pretty much everything, so it may seem that we're obsessing about our pet issues (and we are), but we're also well aware of the threats to democracy, and you'll find a lot of discussion about them here.
That being said, not everything is worthy of the same level of outrage, and that's something that we'll always have to work on. Melania attending a memorial service, for example, is not on the same level as Trump wanting to use the military to "fix" liberal cities, but it sometimes seems like they get the same attention. We could use a filter.

(7,429 posts)is that a little more has been brought out into the light. We've known all along that they didn't expect Pence to show up if he wasn't willing to decertify the vote. Hawley and many others in both chambers were obviously involved. That Pence's son was involved to convince Pence to do the right thing is, frankly, of little consequence. Remember he also spoke to Dan Quayle, and likely others about it. The part that disturbs me is that these assholes are selling books about it, and profiting off their treason.

(32,323 posts)is as Magat as it gets, but he came out and blasted Republicans for lying to the American people about the stolen election.
He is quitting, others are quitting because the fascists are pushing them out.
Honest state election officials got pushed out by Magats, can you blame them, they got death threats and we were told 2 years ago that when Kristen Clarke was confirmed to the Civil rights division of DOJ that those threats would be addressed. BS, we have had thousands of threats and only 3 people have been arrested.
The Insurrection did not end on J6, it is growing, the Project 2025 group has been working hard.
We need the coup planners to be held accountable, sooner rather than, oops, it's too late.

Suppose Wray had gone to another firm that was adversarial to Russian energy interests. Vladimir Putins stoolies are former clients of his law firm.
The Rules of Professional Conduct impute Wrays disqualification from all matters substantially related to the former course of his firms representation. Great pick in 2017 the FBI Director is involved in matters he would be excluded from if he were a personal injury attorney. ETHICAL DISGRACE.

(40,970 posts)most of DU was already aware that Grassley stepped in it regarding Pence not being there & then suddenly Pence announced he would be there. We've known this almost since it happened, although the original story it was Dan Quail who advised him. Maybe it was both since holy Mike was so conflicted about the right thing to do.

(28,836 posts)That's why it isn't news. I'm not sure why it's news to you. The only thing that's new is the confirmation that if Pence intended not to go, Grassley was planning on stepping in.
That's pretty much exactly what Grassley said, though he also initially said he didn't expect Pence to attend, of course, which he clarified almost immediately.
We somehow made that into some kind of silly conspiracy that never existed. There's also zero evidence that Grassley intended not to certify. We pretty much made that up, too.
gab13by13
(32,323 posts)shoots down your defense of Grassley, and that is new.
I already said we knew about the Grassley plot when it unfolded and now we have more confirmation about their plan.
Why in heaven's name would Chesbro send a text that showed Grassley as a replacement for Pence? Chesbro was in on the coup.
You did make me laugh when you said we have no proof that Grassley was going to go along with the coup, maybe someone in law enforcement should investigate him to get some evidence?

(32,323 posts)I was out shopping for tires for my car.
Why this is important news to me is that it shows more evidence how so many members of Congress were involved in the coup plot, and that is scary. Even no statement from Susan Collins that she is concerned.
The bigger picture for me is that Trump has everyone fearful of him and his horde of Magats.
muriel_volestrangler
(106,212 posts)... involvement in the coup plot". Different people. Maybe this confusion is why no one on DU was able to write a thread title saying "new evidence on plotting by Congress members" - because there wasn't anything new.

(25,325 posts)I believe that the Jan 6 hearings had a lot of influence. They were masterfully produced.
A book will probably have less impact, but should help.
Repeating the facts, for example, in the senate and house, would keep the sedition in focus, as will the Georgia trials.
Denials and coverup attempts would just reinforce the valid points being made.
