(3,445 posts)Are there even any Dem candidates anymore who *aren't* pro-choice?
It's a no-brainer in this district anyway, on Long Island. A forced-birther would get walloped in that district.

(3,445 posts)House vacancies are filled by special elections. Governors do not appoint House members.

(17,802 posts)And that will take time.
Even if he does resign, it will take an election to replace him. It would be better to leave his seat empty.

(60,831 posts)Newsom can only appoint Senators, not members of the House. Newsom will have to schedule a special election if McCarthy leaves.
getagrip_already
(17,802 posts)Unless there is a law in ny forcing one, she can wait until the November election to fill it. Or she can schedule an earlier special, but those are expensive and disruptive.
Though we stand a good chance at a pickup if we don't run another ilmar.
edhopper
(37,179 posts)she has to announce the election in 10 days and it must be less than 3 months from then.

(17,802 posts)This isn't a district to put up someone from the far left in. Certainly not someone on the hamas side of the i/p divide.
We might as well surrender the seat now if we do that.

(17,802 posts)Nobody knew he was gay, or a drag queen, or a serial liar.
His district has a large Jewish base, and moderate voters.
Run an Iranian dissident, even a Jewish one, and we will get killed.

(17,802 posts)But surely we can find one progressive, pro choice, pro ukraine, pro israel/palestinian candidate who doesn't want to throw biden out of the white house or support Noam chomsky.

(41,420 posts)No reason what so ever to run a conservative democratic politician to win this district.

(17,802 posts)On all the others. His district really didn't know what he was.
TwilightZone
(28,836 posts)And his local conservative newspaper had written scathing editorials about his past prior to the election and endorsed his opponent.
The DCCC picked up on the endorsement and publicized it and the editorials, but they didn't have much impact.

(17,534 posts)governor did this with state house member in Jeff city after that member left. He refused to call a special election to fill the seat. He said it could wait until the next election-last fall 2022 I believe.

(22,869 posts)He'll be going, tG. I need to see how the state of Ohio will fill the spot. Probably dump a bigger load of crap on that seat.
Special election! Let's see if Tim Ryan can/will run for the seat. I'd vote for any Dem who runs.

(17,802 posts)House seats must be filled by election. They can't be appointed.

(3,445 posts)This morning, the Republicans held 222 seats to the Dems 213. After Santos' expulsion, it will be 221R - 213D. They have 8 more seats. For Dems to take control they would have to grab 5 seats to make it 218D - 216R. A 4-seat gain would result in a 217-217 tie.
I'd still call this a 5-seat majority.
karynnj
(60,831 posts)That is why they said they can only lose 3. If they lost 4, their 221 becomes 217 and our 213 becomes 217. A tie, which is not enough. Before today, they could lose 4.
jcgoldie
(12,046 posts)The difference is they now have 221 republican reps instead of 222... so they can only lose 3 and reach that threshold now because if they lose 4 its 217-217. (I don't think it matters much actually because outside of their stupid inner squabbling over speaker votes, there aren't 4 republican representatives with the integrity to vote their conscience anyway if it means voting with democrats. Any of them with any stones were purged by the Magas like Liz Cheney.)
