'Dictator' Trump warnings spook America

Could a second Donald Trump presidency slide into dictatorship? A sudden spate of dystopian warnings has got America talking about the possibility less than a year before the US elections. Dark scenarios about what could happen if the twice-impeached Republican former president wins in 2024 have appeared in the space of a few days in major US media outlets that include The Washington Post, The New York Times and the Atlantic.

Grim predictions also came from top Republican Trump critic Liz Cheney, who said that the country is "sleepwalking into dictatorship" and that she is weighing a third-party presidential run of her own to try to stop him.Together, they paint a bleak picture of an angrier yet more disciplined Trump than during his first spell in the White House, one who would wreak vengeance on his perceived enemies and possibly try to stay in power beyond the two-term US limit.

Trump, 77, responded to the warnings in typical style by laughing them off -- with an edge. "He says, you're not going to be a dictator, are you? I said no, no, no -- other than day one," Trump said when asked in a televised Fox News town hall on Tuesday if he would abuse power or seek retribution.

The most eye-opening piece appeared in The Washington Post by conservative commentator Robert Kagan, with the headline: "A Trump dictatorship is increasingly inevitable. We should stop pretending." Kagan wrote that if Trump survives the trials he faces over trying to upend the 2020 election and cling to power illegally, and wins the next election, he will in effect feel he is above the law and can get away with anything.

This is the younger generations' election to call. If they don't want their kids growing up with lockdown drills & unaffordable college & no birth control & starter homes that cost half a mill, not to mention zero action on climate change, then they better get out & vote.

8 years ago, this pox on humanity would STILL be sucking the oxygen from anywhere he is. It was inconceivable then to think in 2023 that there are so many ignorant unwashed masses who support such a dangerous charlatan.

I will never be discouraged, only disheartened.

Didn’t think he’d be able to make it through the primary season without shooting himself in the foot. And he did. Repeatedly. But like those weighted clown boxing bags, he just kept popping back up.

And here we are, he still walks free, he still monopolizes all the front pages of every website. It’s an unholy, unhealthy obsession with fame and celebrity that activates a sizable portion of our electorate. Add in the real shitheads, like the boogaloos, and proud idiots, and that’s how things went down in 2016. I wonder if there’s enough resistance today to keep him out in 2024?

Honestly, that there are still hardcore supporters on his side reveals the depth and breadth of mental illness in this country.

about a constitutional republic in his exit, the most disruptive and chaotic in all history. He should have been arrested, tried and imprisoned long before now and that's an indictment of our justice system.

Why are people so dense and distracted?

I don't get this fear mongering. WTF is so scary about that POS?

I do not believe for one second that Slobby and/or his leeches will destroy American democracy. To me, the suggestion disrespects the American heroes who will not allow any BS from these traitors.

I guess the drama steals the glory.

Right now, most of “America” is more concerned with how the “Golden Bachelor” ended than the next election. They definitely are not “spooked”. The people that are here on this website, or listening to what Liz Cheney is saying, are a minority.

Everybody else is going to turn on the TV in September to see who’s running. I admit I could be wrong; they might actually wait until late October…

This nation is just slouching toward fascism.

I still see his cult supporting him without question.
They are still attacking Biden with his lies, they are still proudly wearing the cult colors (shirts, signs, flags and banners).
He has a cult following that would support him to their death.

The dude incited a riot to attack the Capitol and attempted to use the military to stop the transfer of power.

I would call our electorate the "frog in the boiling pot", but the water hasn't ever been cool with Trump. We literally started with him saying that he could shoot someone and not lose votes.
