The fight over the College Football Playoff selection committees decision to snub undefeated Florida State University and pick the University of Alabama is spilling into the Senate, pitting Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) against his Republican colleagues from Alabama.
Scott, who attended the Florida State Seminoles last national championship victory in 2013 when he was governor, is demanding full transparency on the selection committees decision to bump Florida State from the national playoffs in favor of Alabama, which lost to Texas earlier in the season.
For Scott, the secret deliberations to deny Florida State the chance to win another national championship is the latest example of unfair decisions being made in America by unaccountable people behind closed doors.
Scott says Florida State did everything they were supposed to do by going 13-0 on the season and beating two highly-ranked teams, Louisiana State University (LSU) and Louisville.

(7,094 posts)One of the standards that the committee claims leads to an unbiased decision was that if a power 5 conference team had an undefeated season, that would be a determining factor above other factors. They've used that argument to justify picking Clemson, from the same conference, with a similar schedule.
It's still going to be an issue because a committee will still be making the selections instead of competition on the field. And that committee will still be biased, based on money and value of potential playoff games, rather than on the actual sports competition on the field.
Georgia lost to Alabama. Alabama lost to Texas, who got in as a conference champion with one loss. When Alabama beat Georgia, that should have sealed FSU's spot by the committee's own standards.

Of course the way things are going it appears there are only going to be two superconferences going forward (Big 10 and SEC).
It is a big mess. Still politicians should have nothing to do with it.

If he had not played at all this season, they perhaps would not even be undefeated, and now, without him, all 4 of the teams who made the cut would likely beat Florida State, sans Jordan, like a drum. Florida State's schedule was very weak compared to the other 4 teams, as FSU is in a weak (especially with Clemson having a poor team this year) conference.
All that said, it is a fucking HUGE misuse of Senate resources to waste time on this shit. Fuck Rethugs.

(29,573 posts)There is a conference called the University Athletic Association - Wash U, University of Rochester (NY), Case Western Reserve, NYU, Carnegie Mellon, U of Chicago, Emory, and Brandeis.
In the Div 3 post season tournament, 7 out of the 8 UAA teams got into the conference. 7!!!!. 3 of the 7 only won 3 of their 7 regular season conference games, and another 3 only won ONE of their regular season conference games.
So 10% of the 64 teams that got into the post-season tournament were from a single conference, and 6 of them didnt even have winning records. Hows that for unfair?
