Mysterious Link Between Owning Cats And Schizophrenia Is Real, Study Says

A new review suggests that having a cat as a pet could potentially double a person's risk of schizophrenia-related disorders.

Australian researchers conducted an analysis of 17 studies published during the last 44 years, from 11 countries including the US and the UK.

"We found an association between broadly defined cat ownership and increased odds of developing schizophrenia-related disorders," writes psychiatrist John McGrath and fellow researchers, all from the Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research.

This idea that cat ownership could be linked to schizophrenia risk was proposed in a 1995 study, with exposure to a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii suggested as a cause. But the research so far has put forth mixed conclusions.

of causation ... Researchers would be tearing in to that data - and all related data and offshoots - to establish a confirmation of cause. What we have here is a 'link' between separate sets of data. Not causation.

It's estimated that around 40 million people in the US may be infected, usually without any symptoms. Meanwhile, researchers keep finding more strange effects that infections may have.

Credit where due - - the article goes on to point to a number of weaknesses within the study(s) - including a number of studies that did not produce analogous results .. (meaning no correlation)

Something about their poop. So, I'm always shocked when I hear about people scooping poop. I wear a mask, hold my breath, put the entire box in a large garbage bag, seal it up as much as possible and then empty the whole thing in the bag, wash the boxes with the hose and let air dry and make the cats stay outside. I'm trying to train them to poop outside and have been dragging their boxes out into the yard so they will associate the act to the location (anywhere not in front of the house.)

My forest rescue cat is addicted to his box. He must associate it with the only comfort he had before someone dumped him in the country to be raised by raccoons.

and that little bugger might cause neurological issues. Years ago, there were report on tests with infected rodents indicated abnormal responses to stimuli, like no fear of cats, or deep depression

Here's an abstract with more current information
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8548174/]

The intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii is estimated to infect up to 30% of the world population, leading to lifelong chronic infection of the brain and muscle tissue. Although most latent T. gondii infections in humans have traditionally been considered asymptomatic, studies in rodents suggest phenotypic neurological changes are possible. Consequently, several studies have examined the link between T. gondii infection and diseases such as schizophrenia, epilepsy, depression, bipolar disorder, dysphoria, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). To date, there is varying evidence of the relationship of T. gondii to these human neurological or neurobehavioral disorders. A thorough review of T. gondii literature was conducted to highlight and summarize current findings. We found that schizophrenia was most frequently linked to T. gondii infection, while sleep disruption showed no linkage to T. gondii infection, and other conditions having mixed support for a link to T. gondii. However, infection as a cause of human neurobehavioral disease has yet to be firmly established.

When you read 30% of the world population estimated to be infected, and then consider it is suspected in a lot of mental issues, well, it would explain a lot, wouldn't it? Now, we need more research, maybe looking into the % of convicted criminals, psych patients, or MAGAs who eschew basic hygiene practices to protect health might be infected. Perhaps trumpism has an organic component?

My mom gave me the book How to Toilet Train your cat as a Christmas gag gift one year and I actually tried it. And it worked!

?odnHeight=768&odnWidth=768&odnBg=FFFFFF

Product details
Paul Kunkel, who toilet-trained his first cat while in college and who has continued to train his own and his friends' cats ever since, presents a foolproof, 21-Day-Program for teaching any litter-trained cat between the ages of 6 months and 10 years to use a toilet instead of a litter box. (Older cats can still be trained, but the process will probably take longer.) Requiring nothing more than magazines and/or newspapers, masking tape, heavy-duty plastic wrap, and a supply of fresh litter, the plan begins with you placing the box next to the toilet and, after gradually raising it to the height of the seat, ends with the cat--well, using it like any other member of the family. For life. Along the way, concerned owners learn why toilet-trained cats may be happier and healthier cats. In well-researched, fact-filled text, Kunkel traces the history and behavior of this barely domesticated animal and proves why the box is bad for cats; why many cats equate the smell of a litter box with danger; and why the fragrances, deodorants, dyes, and disinfectants found in most litters are detrimental to your pet's well-being.

52. Yes, Pyewacket was her familiar
Sun Dec 10, 2023, 06:30 AM
Dec 2023
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyewacket_(familiar_spirit)

Pyewacket was one of the supposed familiar spirits of an alleged witch accused by the claimed Witchfinder General Matthew Hopkins in March 1644 in the town of Manningtree, Essex, England. Hopkins claimed he spied on the witches as they held their meeting close by his house, and heard them mention the name of a local woman. She was arrested and deprived of sleep for four nights, at the end of which she confessed and called out the names of her familiars, describing the forms in which they should appear. They were:

Holt, "who came in like a white kittling"
Jarmara, "who came in like a fat Spaniel without any legs at all"
Vinegar Tom, "who was like a long-legg'd greyhound, with a head like an Oxe"
Sacke and Sugar, "like a black Rabbet"
Newes, "like a Polecat"
Elemanzer, Pyewacket, Peck in the Crown, Grizzel Greedigut, described as imps

Hopkins claims he and nine other witnesses saw the first five of these, which appeared in the forms described by the witch. Only the first of these was in the form of a cat; the next two were dogs, and the others were a black rabbit and a polecat – so Pyewacket was, presumably, not a cat's name. As for the other familiars, Hopkins says only that they were such that "no mortall could invent." The incident is described in Hopkins's pamphlet "The Discovery of Witches" (1647).

In film and fiction

In the Hollywood film Bell, Book and Candle (1958) Pyewacket is the name of the brown sealpoint Siamese cat/familiar of Gillian Holroyd, a witch played by Kim Novak. The film was adapted from a 1958 Broadway play that continues to be produced in community theatres.

In the 1967 children's novel Pyewacket the title character and protagonist is an alley cat.

Fantasy author Dianne Sylvan’s “Shadow World” series features a Wiccan character, Stella, whose cat is named Pyewacket after the film.

Pyewacket is a 2017 horror film.

Studies have found that being around cats during childhood might make a person more likely to develop schizophrenia; however, not all studies have found an association.

Some also link cat exposure to higher scores on scales that measure traits related to schizophrenia – which affects a person's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors – and psychotic-like experiences, but again, other studies don't show this connection.

To get a clearer picture, McGrath and his team say there's a need for a thorough review and analysis of all the research on these topics.

It affects their ability to smell cat urine. It's really strange.

My first knowledge of it was Trainspotting. The character who contracts HIV/AIDS from heroin use buys a kitten for his ex-gf who rejects it. He ends up stuck with a kitten he doesn't know how to care for - and he's too high to do it anyway - so it craps all over his apartment. He contracts taxoplasmosis and dies of a brain abscess.

It was a vivid monologue. I have two cats I adore, but every time I clean their litter box, I remember that part of the movie and sanitize like a madman.

than from cats. Even when people get Toxoplasmosis their symptoms can be non-existent or very mild. It doesn’t inevitably result in schizophrenia. From the Mayo Clinic website:

"Toxoplasmosis (tok-so-plaz-MOE-sis) is an infection with a parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. People often get the infection from eating undercooked meat. You can also get it from contact with cat feces. The parasite can pass to a baby during pregnancy.

Most people infected with the parasite do not have symptoms. Some people get flu-like symptoms. Serious disease most often affects infants and people with weakened immune systems. Toxoplasmosis during pregnancy may cause miscarriage and birth defects.

Most infections don't need treatment. Drug treatment is used for people with more-serious cases, pregnant people, newborns and people with weakened immune systems.”
