Texas Supreme Court rules against woman who sought abortion for medical emergency

Reuters

OPINION

The Texas Supreme Court on Monday overturned a lower court's ruling that would have allowed a pregnant woman to get an emergency abortion under the medical exception for the state's near-total abortion ban, granting a petition by Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton.

The ruling from the Texas Supreme Court came after lawyers for the woman, Kate Cox, said in a court filing that she had left the state to obtain the abortion, but nonetheless wanted to pursue the case.

"Kate's case has shown the world that abortion bans are dangerous for pregnant people, and exceptions don't work," Nancy Northrup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights, which represents Cox, said in a statement at the time of that court filing. The group did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday's decision.

Paxton's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

but you're right about "she" as a general term - women who can't get out so easily, who have an enemy that turns them in for trying to get out, etc. are to be sacrificed.

If a woman dies or becomes infertile due to being forced to carry a non-viable pregnancy, that's just too bad, isn't it? My grandmother had what they called a therapeutic abortion over 80 years ago. Today they'd probably arrest her.

"Pro-life" is a myth. These people don't give a crap about life. All it means is the thrill of controlling women and making them so terrified these power-hungry men can taste the fear. May Paxton, Abbott and their ilk all rot in hell.

MY maternal grandmother had two abortions about 90 years ago from her doctor for financial reasons (during the Great Depression). My family was all Republican but they thought abortion was practically a sacrament (before religion got a hold of the their party).

there’s a sissy spacek movie about a kindergarten teacher, i think, w a wanted pregnancy that had taken thalidomide. no ultrasounds back then, so she wasnt even sure.
hospitals used to have doctor’s committees to decide who could have an abortion. the docs turned her down. she went to mexico.
title- a private matter.

I would love to know what part of the Texas constitution says anyone should be injured or killed because religion says timely medical intervention to prevent it is a no no.

She has now given up her home and her family. She cannot return to Texastan because that loon Paxton will have her arrested and in solitary before she even gets to see a phone. They will harass her relatives to try and find her so that they can grab her and drag her back. (They don't like it when the world does not turn as they want it to.)

Do we know any of this? No, we don't. I certainly don't. But, how can she return to her home with this going on? What makes her think she won't have a target on her back for the rest of her life? You honestly think those yahoos in the Texas legislature will allow this to just 'pass'?

... it's Tuesday. Just another ho-hum day for Paxton and all the rest of the evil filth that believe it's their Gawd-given right to fuck over anyone with the temerity to disagree with their diseased belief system. A system which is, apparently, more important than the life of an uppity woman who can probably never go back there and live safely. But then, who in their right mind would want to? I've been there. NONE of those visits were ever pleasant. They can keep it.
Rumor has it that there are a lot of Texans that support secession. Well, let 'em secede. And they want a wall? We'll give 'em one. ALL the way around that godforsaken toilet of a state. Fence it off and let 'em eat each other. Or maybe just give it back to Mexico. If they'll have it.

Paxton, karma's lickin' its chops for you. And your day of reckoning can't come soon enough.
