The man hears voices in his head. The other day God told him, clearly told him, that he is the 'new Moses!' The man is insane and should not be holding the gavel, let alone 2nd in line.

Thanks for posting this, ancianita. Just reading the reviews scares the heck out of me. Looks like a must read.
Stewart pulls back the curtain on the inner workings and leading personalities of a movement that has turned religion into a tool for domination. She exposes a dense network of think tanks, advocacy groups, and pastoral organizations embedded in a rapidly expanding community of international alliances and united not by any central command but by a shared, anti-democratic vision and a common will to power. She follows the money that fuels this movement, tracing much of it to a cadre of super-wealthy, ultraconservative donors and family foundations. She shows that todays Christian nationalism is the fruit of a longstanding antidemocratic, reactionary strain of American thought that draws on some of the most troubling episodes in Americas past. It forms common cause with a globe-spanning movement that seeks to destroy liberal democracy and replace it with nationalist, theocratic and autocratic forms of government around the world. Religious nationalism is far more organized and better funded than most people realize. It seeks to control all aspects of government and society. Its successes have been stunning, and its influence now extends to every aspect of American life, from the White House to state capitols, from our schools to our hospitals.
The Power Worshippers is a brilliantly reported book of warning and a wake-up call. Stewarts probing examination demands that Christian nationalism be taken seriously as a significant threat to the American

(43,307 posts)Based on the Christians I've met in Florida, I think that even most christians don't know about these networks, but their church leaders probably do. There's definitely a drive to religious power here that is both anti-biblical and anti-Jesus.

(4,741 posts)They're not out of step with the book or the supposed deity all that much.
Promoting divisiveness so that they can persecute and murder those who won't march lockstep with them to achieve total domination of everything? The book, the demigod and the christian nationals are all in on those things.
Maybe you need to read the book--all of it--to see how they're not as far apart as apologists for that religion like to claim.

(43,307 posts)very teachings were about peace, non-judgment, and spirit, and of children "for such is the kingdom of God."
Mike Johnson and his christian nationalists don't care that not one statement by Jesus in any red letter Bible (red lettered to show what the authors witnessed Jesus say) shows that those seek temporal power through know nothing of him or his "Father." Like the Jewish Pharisees of his day.
That right there is well funded fascism cloaked in fake christian theater. Not biblical at all. Sure, I'll finish the book; just got into it this past weekend.
Sure, call him a demi-god. But with the difference that he rejected temporal power and tried to bring love and peace to the world. There isn't a great leader who taught love and peace who wasn't murdered.
The only power in the biblical sense was the Old Testament power shown to Moses by God, to help the wandering Hebrews, God's "chosen" people," because their ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were chosen by that God to know and follow God and his/her commandments, with the promise that they would be at peace and thrive in their new homeland.
These christian nationalists' understanding is ridiculously out of step with both the Bible and Jesus in that they follow leaders who preach "false doctrine;" that is, doctrine that promotes religious pulpit and rally power which has never squared with Jesus' statements in the New Testament.
If you haven't read/studied the New Testament after the historical narrative of the Old Testament's development of the concept of a "letter of the law God" and then Jesus huge shift to a 'spirit of the law,' loving God who's 'demi-god' joined humanity in a life that, while suffering, showed a peace and love that spread to a new understanding to hundreds of millions, of a meaningful life of spiritual growth beyond religion, patriarchy and power. I don't know what more can be said, except that if you yourself have some understanding of christianity based on what you've read about them, perhaps you don't understand enough about Jesus based Christianity to know how totally out of step Mike Johnson and these christians are.
Jesus would call them pharisees -- those who pose as spiritual while seeking power.
You should make an OP out of this, its chilling.
I am going to see if my library has this. TY.

The only question is what causes the broken brains, and, in far too many cases, that cause is religious indoctrination.
