Finland has once again closed its border with Russia after it was open for just one day, following a surge of asylum seekers crossing from Russia.

(20,335 posts)The Finish Air Force alone would shred the Soviets, er, Russians in the sky. NATO and EU forces would be icing on the cake.
And any diversion of forces from Ukraine means certain death for Russians left to hold Crimea and Donbas.
All Russia still has to be a superpower is a nuclear arsenal they can't use for fear of World War 3.

Then Putin uses the immigrant issue to help install his far right puppets into European
and US governments quite successfully.

(7,794 posts)If you were trained to destabilize western nations, every western nation is a nail. Well,..............that's what the hammer thinks about everything. Hammers don't do intelligence. It's just an adage comparison montage thing.
Russia is a society inured to the effects of propaganda. They simply believe nothing. That's how Putin has our number (at least 40%, enough to destabilize our democracy, government and our society). We have too many folks who actually believe total BS is "NEWS", as if it came right from Walter Cronkite's desk.
The Russian people have long relied on distilled spirits to strengthen their ability to persevere. Americans are amateurs at mass alcoholism. It will be our downfall, potatoes used for French fries. What a misallocation of resources. The learning curve will be painful.
Planetary population growth and its associated stresses will also grow ever more painful.

(81,172 posts)You are spot on and obviously have figured out some of the same things I have.
However I think there is more to it then just an old KGB agent who
keeps on ticking like the energizer bunny. Which is a really good visual for Putin.
Except he is a little evil devil who will not stop, ever.
The story is that when Putin was a young KGB agent and the USSR fell apart,
he was brokenhearted. He blamed the US and the CIA and he vowed revenge.
So we see him desperately trying to break up the United States. And making
each US state more like a nation state independent from each other, just like
the USSR turned into various nations.
And then there is another big variable, and that is the fact Putin wants to be a
global 21st-century superpower. And he cannot do that without regional control of
Europe and Ukraine.
This is one big reason he invaded Ukraine, he must get regional control of Europe.
So part of Putin's motivation is pure and simple revenge, the more cruel the better
and the happier he is.
And then to become a global superpower he has to damage the United States and
Europe as much as possible. The autocrats of the world are uniting and they are
determined to see Western democracies fail. The US GOP is only too happy to help
with the autocratic plan. Because they want what the autocrats have, total permanent power
and access to all state financial assets.
Yes the Russian people have become totally disconnected from politics and government.
They have a contract of sorts with Putin, as long as they have food on the table and a roof
over their heads, Putin can do whatever the hell he wants to do. They also have no other choice,
because to go against Putin is to die, either in or out of jail.
I think the PutinGOP is gradually doing the same to Americans. They are so outrageous,
so over the top, people are becoming desensitized. Trump commits more crimes? So what?
Commits treason by over throwning an election and stealing and selling classified documents?
People cannot even keep track of the GOP crime spree and clown show and probably ignore most
of it.
So many serious and outrageous events every week just wear people down to the point we will
be like the Russians one day.
Yep the addiction rate will get worse in this country.
And like Russia, the life expectancy will be greatly lowered.
But for poor Putin, it has backfired. He has made life so miserable
women are not having children and now Russia's population is in
serious decline. And he has had a brain drain of smartest Russians who
fled the country when he invaded Ukraine. Now he is threatening and bribing
Russian women to have more children.
The US GOP is getting a jump start on this problem by banning abortion and they will work on
banning birth control.
My goodness Jax, you said it all: The (US) learning curve will be painful.
The pain has all ready started for some of us who see our country disappearing in front of our eyes.

(9,097 posts)Incursions by would-be refugees etc. along the many borders between Russia and its western neighbours are more or less a daily occurrence, and yes, no doubt encouraged by Putin for his own reasons.
In no meaningful sense is it a military assault, and it's really, really not BREAKING!!1!!!
There are weekly, if not daily, "fires" and explosions at Russian installations of various types, so they may be worth reporting, but in context.
To be fair, there's still a lot of reliable news and analysis on Twitter if you block the sludge. This isn't part of it.

(15,381 posts)Jobs are a problem, though, as the Finns don't have as much work available for people they aren't willing to do themselves. Unlike some supposedly first world countries.
On edit, it appears the current issue is that Russia is funneling relatively large numbers of economic migrants and refugees from Syria and various troubled African nations through Russia into Finland, pulling a Governor Abbott on them. What's troubling is that it also appears Wagner and/or Russian "Aid" groups are recruiting these migrants.

(11,212 posts)Finands Nordic neighbour Sweden, on the brink of joining NATO, signed a similar deal last week.
NATOs newest member, Finland, has announced it will sign a bilateral defence cooperation agreement next week with the United States.
The deal will allow Washington to station troops and store weapons inside the Nordic country, which shares a sprawling border with Russia.
Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen told a news conference in Helsinki on Thursday that Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen will sign the so-called Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA) on Monday.

I believe that Putin has off'd most of the senior Russian military command structure and replaced with Putin true-belivers. He will gladly order the use of such weapons if he knows he's at the end of his line with there's nothing in the way to stop him.

(29,346 posts)Latin American countries are invading our southern border through illegal immigration.
I have no doubt that things are rough in Russia, or even that there are people trying desperately to find refuge elsewhere. But to frame it (without any evidence) as an act of war on Finland seems calibrated to produce heat rather than light.

(6,655 posts)HELSINKI (Reuters) -Finland closed again its border with Russia on Friday evening at 1800 GMT for a month, after more than 300 asylum seekers entered from Russia within two days, the Finnish Border Guard said.
The Nordic country reopened two border crossings on Thursday to allow travel between the two countries after a two-week total closure, but the Finnish government decided the same day to close them again on Friday, after the inflow of asylum seekers restarted as soon as the border restrictions were relaxed.
Some 900 asylum seekers from nations such as Kenya, Morocco, Pakistan, Somalia, Syria and Yemen entered Finland from Russia in November, an increase from less than one per day previously, according to the Border Guard.
Helsinki says the inflow of asylum seekers arriving via Russia is an orchestrated move by Moscow in retaliation for Finland's decision to increase defence cooperation with the United States. The Kremlin denies this.

(8,380 posts)Kind of like saying 'Mexico weaponizing illegal immigrants to invade U.S.' Even if they are just funneling immigrants to the border to screw with the Finns it sounds like a lot of people just don't want to be in Russia right now.
As for the rest, we've seen it before if you look back a ways. There were a number of anti-war people blowing things up over here during the Vietnam conflict.

(114,597 posts)so that families could visit before and during Xmas. Putin rushed in immigrants on bicycles to try to crash the border.
It didn't work and now the entire border is closed and it has been fortified. I understand their border patrol is ferocious, detaining anyone found near the border, Finn or not, until they're satisfied about the reason they were there.
Finland is not fucking around.
