A post by madamesilverspurs in the gunhumper thread had me rolling on the floor. I can't figure out how to copy and paste it on my tablet, so I won't quote it, but it was about telling a gunhumper about Viagra.
Anyway, it got me thinking about a possible commercial along the lines of:
(Show a sad guy)
"Are you embarrassed at your size?"
(He looks down and nods)
"Are you having trouble getting it up?"
(He looks down again and nods)
"Talk to your doctor. Ask him to give you a prescription for a sidearm that you can wear proudly."
(Fade to later. Now he's wearing a gun and smiling)

(22,218 posts)Well, you'd be hard pressed to find an MD who would prescribe a Glock, but still. And it's not just penis size, although that's a good catch all for a host of male problems. Many are just frightened little men with crippling insecurities and can't function properly in a civilized society. They're pathetic really.

(4,131 posts)last update in January 2022, several groups have shown increased interest in purchasing firearms. The largest groups include:
First-Time Gun Buyers: Many individuals who had never owned firearms before began purchasing them amid concerns about personal safety, civil unrest, or uncertainties during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Women: There has been a notable increase in firearms ownership among women. Many are seeking self-defense options and are participating more actively in shooting sports.
Minorities: Some minority groups, including African Americans and Asian Americans, have shown increased interest in gun ownership, partly due to concerns about rising hate crimes and a desire for self-protection.
Urban Residents: Residents from urban areas, where gun ownership traditionally wasn't as prevalent, have been showing increased interest in firearms for personal safety reasons.
Younger Demographics: Younger individuals, including millennials and Gen Z, have shown growing interest in firearms, partly due to concerns about personal safety and a desire for self-reliance.

(23,882 posts)I think another group that should be added - although it is really part of the rest is:
People afraid of all the rest that have guns: Those that read/see news reports that talk about how many new people are buying guns.

When the whole world has a gun we'll finally be safe.

(22,695 posts)All guns are purchased by obese white males over 40 who are unable to maintain a healthy relationship with any female. 83.62678% live in their mom's basement. I read this on the internet.
Any data, reports, eyewitness accounts you hear otherwise are false

(22,218 posts)Seems rural, Republican, white men in the south, with lower educational attainment are more apt to own firearms. The stereotype isn't perfect, but it does fit. By far the top reason for owning firearms is protection. From what? These are people who aren't very good at probabilities perhaps.

Most of the recent threads are focused on "Tex" walking around the local Home Depot with heat strapped to his hip. Like he's going to get jumped by terrorists in appliances.
I've owned a deer rifle, the ubiquitous Marlin 30-30, and a 12 gauge shotgun since my teens. They get cleaned on occasion but spend the vast majority of their time collecting dust. They were for hunting of course, but I have long since outsourced my protein acquisition, particularly when it's 20 degrees or less outside. If someone finds that fun, hey, whatever. But don't do it to stroke your fragile manhood. That's really kind of pathetic.

(25,410 posts)Thumb through some gun magazines and check the ads. You'll think "they must be joking", but they're not.
This need to be "manly" is a deep-seated obsession in America.

(6,672 posts)or why they do so: collectors, self-protection, fear, or whatever. My issue is with people who wear them in public. I think they're pathetic.
Maybe channeling their heroes in Western movies?

I just dont get it, and I believe it actually works against getting sensible gun reform done.

(3,396 posts)I dont believe I am purposefully or otherwise obtuse.
I am saying it is stupid and if I am not mistaken an example of body (or medical) shaming a person. Thats cool though right?
If you are using a shorthand for weak men by attacking peoples medical condition, or body
. That is pretty damned weak.

(2,317 posts)Also do so because of erectile dysfunction? And are you just referring to male republicans or do you also disparage the millions of male Democrats who own guns? That seems like a winning strategy.

(22,218 posts)They really don't need a "manhood" card. Gun manufacturers have been working that angle for a long, long time. They know their target audience, pun intended.

(3,396 posts)They use that angle BECAUSE of the tying of guns to genitalia by those that want gun reform.
We should have gun reform because of public health and safety not because we want to challenge men based on our perception of their genitalia insecurities. Sophomoric strategies rarely are successful.
