Police conducted a welfare check at the Nashville home shortly before midnight Dec. 11 following a request from the juvenile boys employer, according to Davidson County arrest affidavits obtained by McClatchy News. A Metropolitan Nashville Police Department officer found the boy wide-eyed, disheveled and trembling, with a scratch along the back of his hand, unevenly cut hair and lumps on his face, police said.
The boy told police he had recently become a Christian and his Muslim family attacked him over his decision. During the altercation, the boy said his family demanded he recant and say he was a Muslim, police reported in the affidavit.
He said his brother, mother and father repeatedly punched him and spat in his face, then his mother scratched the back of his hand with a knife, according to police.

(15,549 posts)You can convert too the faith. You cannot convert away ... Upon penalty ...
(And quite obviously not all are going to act upon this - just as all Christians are not going to follow a prescription to 'kill' witches. But, it should be noted that the prescription is there ... And such action is not unknown.)

(658 posts)and they are the source of any idiocy that emerges among believers of every type. Ordinary people of faith are tolerant, strive to be kind, respectful of differences, and supportive of diversity. Those who interpret their Scriptures unvariably literally, and are not respectful of individuals' consciences, almost always overreact to anything which challenges their belief system. Most of us respect the philosophy of atheism, the peaceful expressions of Islam, Judaism, the variants of Christianity, Hinduism, Universalism and all the beautiful expressions of many forms of faith around us. And the intolerance and violence of individuals like those exposed in this post bring us abhorrence and great sadness. Authentic faith brings tranquility and comfort. The example in this post does not. May this exposure help them reassess their position.

(9,148 posts)sound exactly the same to me as an arguments over whether Santa is better than the Easter Bunny. It's ALL fiction and mythology, and none of it makes a lick of sense or has any basis in reality whatsoever. Magic isn't real, and neither are supernatural beings.
How tragic that these parents turned on their own child over something like this.

Terrible things are done in the name of one god or another over and over.
Kid in my high school came out as gay to his fundamentalist family. They beat him, then kicked him out. Disowned him. His parents both died without ever seeing him again...or wanting to.
It isn't just one religion.
