I bought a new car a few weeks ago and it came with a free four-month subscription to SXM. Fine, ok.
Then a couple of weeks ago I received a letter from them offering to extend the free subscription for three months, but there was a two-dollar "processing charge." Farther down the page, the fine print said that my subscription would then continue automatically, unless I cancelled, at the rate of $29.95 a month.
No way, Jose. I've been down that path before.
And now this shows up on CNN:

(1,260 posts)I forgot to cancel so it automatically renewed. I called them and in ten minutes they canceled the subscription and refunded the charge. I get the sense that theyre nervous about new legislation and are reining in some of their more egregious practices.

(960 posts)I make a note in my calendar for whenever the sub is about to expire. During cancelation, they offer a sub (usually for another year I think) that comes out to 7ish dollars a month, which I find an acceptable amount. But I also knew that was how it worked going in. However, cancelling should absolutely be easier and shouldn't involve having to call or otherwise talk to a representative.

(3,296 posts)Just got one of those offer emails this afternoon. They have even called me twice now since we bought the car last month.

(46,055 posts)Got the same way. Every year, as soon as they raise the monthly fee, I call them and ask them to lower it. I've never paid more than $8 a month that way.
