Washington Post: “It was one more gut punch from a broken immigration system untouched by Congress for 33 years and largely operating on a framework dating to 1965. As a record surge of unauthorized migrants enters the United States through its southern border, stoking political divisions and straining resources, the troubled system for those eligible to come here legally has buckled in the background. Congress splintered over the issue again this month, as Republicans resisted calls from the Biden administration for more aid to Ukraine unless it comes with more-stringent border policies.”

“Since Congress last updated the number of new arrivals the country will admit each year — a tiny fraction of whom are allowed to come in permanently to work — the economy is more than twice as large. But despite growing demand to help fill 8.7 million open jobs with skilled and unskilled foreign-born workers, strict quotas keep out millions of qualified immigrants every year. Demand was so high this year that the State Department was forced to restrict many types of visas, including — for the first time in years — those for nurses.”

is about to topple our President. If the Dems don't come up with an answer it will become the number 1 issue with independent voters. How many years do they think they can go without doing anything? Even the Hispanic vote is in play as they are most immediately impacted by the lack of leadership.

she and Pres Biden proposed revisions to the system, repugs failed/refused to consider it/them, so NO ACTION taken in 3+ years. Of course, let's not confuse the public with mere FACTS.

Gotta research what was the story V.P. Harris referenced. Slim margins in House for both parties.

the GOP refused to even consider it. And yet the GOP constantly blames Biden for border issues as a political ploy.

We need more immigrants. We need to protect the DACA folks. And we need a comprehensive plan that will help on the Southern border.

These is only one way this can happen with the divide we now have in America - Compromise. The GOP refuses to compromise and the media never, never, ever say that - ever.

Come together and do what is right for America and stop the political stonewalling.

For years, the biggest single source of illegal immigrants was Chinese college students overstaying their student visas. But Mexican drug runners are scarier, so we focus on that.

A lot of russian students come for summer work and never leave, many of the women often hook up with a baby daddy to stay in country. Saw it happen with at least one every year in a tiny tourist town for over a decade. J1s are famous for that around here.

There are problems with immigration. For one, it is still a very racist system. For another, a lot of the immigration, especially from Mexico and Central America, is exacerbated by policies with trade and commerce that the US imposes on those countries, with our drug policy, and other interference from the US and other countries that create the conditions that lead to people deciding to leave everything they know to risk their lives thinking things will be better in the US.

The media facilitates the idea that people are coming to take jobs, to place strain on our services, etc... Our services are strained but not because we can't make more, but because greedy rich people refuse to pay a bit more in taxes to help the average person and poor people. They hoard the resources and leave the rest of us to suffer privations.

Good post. It’s desperately overdue for attention and it’s getting worse by the day now.
