(3,976 posts)When I was in high school, I had a book of his speeches that was published while he was in office. I lost the book long ago and I've searched for it online, hoping to get another copy... but I can't find it. I don't even know the title. If you (or anyone reading this) have any clue of the title, please let me know. I loved the speeches in that book... and I'm a speechwriter today.

(2,806 posts)Unfortunately, that whole collection (9 volumes for Carter) costs $720 today, thus the need for something...well, less than $720.

(3,976 posts)Your post got me thinking about that book again, and I think it might have been a hardcover copy of A Government as Good as its People, which contained speeches from his time as governor, speeches from his presidential campaign, and his inaugural address (but no other presidential speeches as it was published early in his term).

In any case, I'm going to get a copy.

(2,806 posts)Sorry, I tried to post earlier and it didn't go through.
Basically, police are trained to look for "suspicous persons." The problem is that their definition often matches autistic people: they do not maintain eye contact (and therefore are not trustworthy), have odd posture, different accent, different-looking eyes, or frankly just look high sometimes.
A good example of this is what happened to Bob Dylan (widely thought to be autistic) a couple of years ago. He was arrested for just walking around, by a young cop who didn't know who Bob Dylan was, for looking suspicious and being in a mostly Latino neighborhood.

(802 posts)...where you are brother, but this fellow Georgian wishes you well. There ain't many places in this state that would elect a DUer in the first place, and as soon as they realize what they've done, somebody - maybe the 'basketball goal' guy - will start trying to bring you down. So you're gonna need all the well-wishes you can get...and a lot more besides.

I was elected to a rural town board a year and a half ago. People are much
more interested in their officials solving local problems and working together,
rather than labels. I think you'll do just fine.

I believe that I have Asperger's, but really on the spectrum am fairly close to "normal". Just not very sociable.

Congratulations to you...
and I offer some free advice (remember you're getting what you paid for it)
Remember...you have to protect the rights of everybody now...you're EVERYBODY'S MAYOR...even those with whom you do not agree.....
count to 10 before making any decision (okay..so I usually only make it to three)...
You will see and hear things that will tear your heart out....don't let those things steal your humanity...
You are a public servant...not a king...
Ask lots of questions...
Staff DOES have their own agenda...be skeptical.
Just a few thoughts.

(4,243 posts)Do we call you Mr. Mayor or Mr. Mayor-elect?
tpsbmam
(3,927 posts)Yeah, you'll need help along the way -- take it from someone whose father was a mayor for a while. Doesn't matter what the size of the town/city is, there are issues and problems you'll encounter that call for backup! As for disability issues, I have a fair amount of experience dealing with it on an individual basis and coming up against the powers that be and having to fight for disability rights. I'm personally disabled and, in my current community, have had to fight some battles having to do with physical access (which I've won....so far) and have more upcoming.
It's been my experience professionally (I worked with people with a wide variety of disabilities, often by enabling people to step up and fight necessary battles for their rights, sometimes with my assistance in the background) and personally that we encounter issues, such as the "suspicion" one you mentioned, just through living and enter into those pushes for disability rights as they arise in the course of our day-to-day lives.
Sometimes, it's simply a matter of awareness. I can't tell you the number of times I've approached it as a matter of educating people. Most people probably don't know and wouldn't think of the similarities between many persons with autism & "suspicious" behavior as you've described it. I'm aware of those qualities in autism but frankly, it wouldn't have occurred to me so it took you making the link to "educate" me. See? In some cases it'll be as simple as that. In others, you'll have to do more work and enlist help. There are many psychologists and other professionals who specialize in autism spectrum disorders -- it might help you to enlist the help of one or more of those experts to educate the local police and, should you feel incredibly ambitious (it would seem that challenges don't intimidate you).....homeland security! You'd be doing an amazing service.
Please PM me if you think I might be able to help in any way. And congratulations, Mr. Mayor!

(7,006 posts)Awesome job indeed fellow elected public servant!
I was elected Park Commissioner for my local community, officially after November 6th election. We had a primary in August were all Democrats ran against each other (i.e. -- its' fairly impossible for a Republican to get elected in my local community within the S.E. Michigan woods).
I won one of nine seats on the Parks Commission out of twelve candidates. So, in the November 6th election, candidates that won in August ran unopposed.
