These "Trump smells" threads are getting on my nerves.

My daughter smells too, or did until just before her 5th birthday. She had undiagnosed ulcerative colitis, which gave her uncontrollable bouts with diarrhea. I'd been fighting with her doctor who insisted nothing was wrong with her for most of a year by that point. And diapers are not much of a match for ulcerative colitis in an almost 5-year old.

She may smell again - she was hospitalized for most of a month this year while they debated removing part or all of her colon. Ostomies are much easier to handle than they used to be - but there are still ill-fitting bags, or the occasional leak.

My grandma smelled too - until she died at 101 from c. diff. A disease that gave her repeated bouts with uncontrollable diarrhea, in a nursing home that is (as most of them are) chronically understaffed.

My mom at 92 smells too. She has IBS and uncontrollable flatulence.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if Franklin Roosevelt (paralyzed from the waist down) smelled.

To be blunt, shit (and flatulence) happen. And they stink. It's a part of life, and it is more a part of life of those who are elderly, or living with disabilities that make it impossible to completely control our bowels and their output.

What are we - 12?

At the risk of sounding like a broken record - When you make fun of Trump for a condition that many people share (probably including a bunch of folks reading these threads) you are telling those people exactly what you think of them, and it ain't pretty.

Ridicule him for something other than a medical condition shared by a lot of folks we love.

Trump could really help people with medical conditions resulting in strong body odor, halitosis, or gastric issues by coming forward, if true, and proving one can survive and thrive with such conditions. Kind of like Biden has done with stuttering issues.

Instead, it appears it is something to be ashamed of and ridiculed because of, and therefore seem worthy of coverups and denials. I detest Trump's racism, sexism, vindictiveness, cruelty, attacks on women's and minority rights, xenophobia, and other behaviors. I would much prefer the media concentrate on those behaviors and Trump's actual self serving policy proposals.

FYI: I personally suffer from UC and may very well need an ostomy some day. I practice good hygiene, and so far have been quite lucky managing my flare ups. Even so, there have been times that I may have "smelled" for a bit.

My daughter's hospitalization this fall was a wake-up call. She's lived with it for 30 years and this is the first time she's had a symptomatic flare. All of the doctors were appalled that her doctor had not been planning with her for the removal of her colon, given that at 30 years into the disease most people have had multiple hospitalizations and their colon is on its last leg. (That's a whole other story - their refusal to believe my daughter until two of her own doctors stepped in and confirmed everything she had told them)

I remember between her 4th birthday and her 5th birthday when went went to a ball pit/net climbing/etc. place. She was not yet diagnosed because her doctor was a jerk, wearing diapers (and about to head into kindergarten in diapers), and had an explosive BM in the middle of the ball pit. Other kids in the pit with her got fecal matter on them before the staff could close the area off. I remember being in a stall in the bathroom cleaning her off as another parent stood at the sink area (unaware I was there) berating any parent who would bring a not-yet-potty-trained kid to the common play area.

The inability to guarantee she could make it to the toilet on time, as well as reactions like that parent's, changed my child from one who cried when I picked her up from daycare because she wanted to stay into one who cried when I was going to be out of her sight.

Should Roosevelt have been disqualified because he was paralyzed from the waist down and, at least part of his life, unable to go to the bathroom without assistance? In my opinion that is not a disqualifier for being president.

But whether it is in your mind or not, considering it in determining capability to be president is different from flinging it at him as an insult.

and using a medical condition as an insult is offensive. When you insult Trump because he stinks, I know exactly how you feel about my my daughter, grandma, mother, and anyone else who has bodily odors they are unable to control. I've been in the room plenty of times when someone used gay as an insult, because they didn't realize I was listening; or suggest that a rape victim asked for it - because they didn't realize I was listening; trashed native americans as drunks, because they didn't realize I was listening. No matter what those people said later, I knew how they really felt about me - because of the things they said about me when they didn't know I fell into the category they were trashing.

The further we all go down this road, the more damage done if President Biden so much as farts outdoors. Eventually, if anyone in Biden's cabinet or immediate family flatulates publicly, it will become front page news and an audio clip of said release will find it's way into every podcast and morning zoo radio show, because that's how the media treats Democrats and their families -- if we pretend otherwise, we'll pay the PR price.

It's a foolish and cruel line of attack, coming complete with the seeds of its own destruction. I hope it recedes within a week.

Sun Dec 24, 2023, 12:57 AM
Dec 2023

Old people who don't look after their health tend to smell.

If your kidneys can't cope with the diet you had in your youth, volatile organic compounds are excreted through your skin.
And farts, if your gut biome is off balance.
And that smells. Wafts of sewage works.
No matter how many showers you have in a day.
And you won't feel very healthy while oozing stink from every pore in your body.

But . . . if you are a narcissist, think you are immortal and hell bent on revisiting the White House as the head occupant, you are going to live in a state of total denial.
So I'm guessing Trump stinks at times. If so, he needs to take notice.

(I'm old. Given up any form of meat, try to avoid greasy foods. I feel better and smell less. Wife still tells me I stink. Thanks, dear!)

But let's be honest.
Trump has done 101 (at least) things that should have knocked him out of the ballpark as far as being a serious political candidate.
And it hasn't happened yet.
So all that is left is . . . personal attacks! Hoping he will throw a big sulk and just GO AWAY!

He rapes women
He gives security secrets to the Russians
He ties to overturn an election
He enriched himself from foreign governments while president
and so many more, if this is what takes him down so what. Nothing else has hurt his chances of being president again. Remember a joyous expression took down Dean after winning the New Hampshire primary many years ago. I will go with whatever removes this shit stain from public office forever

When you say or type scorn and ridicule about someone because they smell, you are proclaiming to anyone who reads or hears them what you really feel about anyone who smells.

How Trump behaves is completely irrelevant - it is YOUR choice to use personal characteristics as insults that targets everyone with those characteristics.

Find something other than his odor (or his weight) to criticize him. It's not like he is a perfect person. I'm sure there are one or two other things you can find to criticize him for.

37. I've struggled not to mock him for it
Sun Dec 24, 2023, 02:08 AM
Dec 2023

Part of me feels like he should be attacked and ridiculed with every weapon available to us, and that includes his age, his health, his weight, his intellect, and so on. He certainly would make use of such insults, and indeed he has done so many times before. In that sense, it seems not unreasonable to mock him by those same criteria, tarring him with his own brush.

But about two years ago a friend called me out for using ableist insults. I truly hadn't realized that I'd been doing it, but once I was made aware, I couldn't help seeing myself doing it, and I hated it.

Better to attack someone's actions and their thinking and their statements. In most cases they have control of these, so it's fitting to go after things that they've done by choice.

But a medical condition? Or diminished physical or mental capacity? Absolutely off-limits.

If we want to be better than Trump's ignorant KKKult, we have to be better than his ignorant KKKult.

Disclaimer: if he's simply maintaining poor hygiene and has no relevant medical condition to explain it, then the gloves are off.

There are things I say that I just don't recognize are racist, ablist, etc. If it is not my lived experience. I am always grateful when it is pointed out to me (either by a direct conversation or at times when I see the expression on someone's face and I try to reconstruct what I just said).

The problem with taking the gloves off if it is unrelated to a medical condition is that at least half of what is being said ties it explicitly or implicitly to incontinence. Incontinence is always the result of a medical condition. It would be hard to draw the line separating out "it's just hygeine" from the barbs about him being incontinent.

My point is that it is not. It is the result of a medical condition - whether temporary or permanent. It is not a thing of shame.

Treating it as if it was, and using it to ridicule, makes it harder for people - especially those with chronic conditions that make continence impossible and/or unpredictable.

There is plenty of evidence that his mind is not capable of managing all of the affairs he must as president, without ridiculing what is (if true as alleged) is a medical condition.

I would love very much to "kill 'em with kindness" and play nice with these goons. I do feel for what your daughter went through. Don't get me wrong. It's impossible for me to show any sympathy or compassion for Dolt 45

That compassion and sympathy is all going out to the people being harmed and threatened by this madman. Ol' Boots has many people that they care about who will be gravely hurt by TFG should he seize the White House again. I'm far more worried about them than by Groper Don's ego or his cult's feelings

As Wes Unseld once said "For 48 minutes you and I were going to knock heads. If you had something weak about you I was going to exploit it and make it weaker.

If we need to throw dirt in their eyes so be it. We must win and sadly we can't get caught up on playing nice. Too much is at stake and too many will suffer if we don't win.

It has to do with not killing innocent bystanders with your scorn when you use personal characteristics (weight, race, gender identity, medical conditions) as an insult. When you use these things to throw dirt in their eyes, you also throw it in my eyes (as the daughter, mother, and granddaughter of people who smell), or as an lgbt person, etc. I'm sure you'd say you didn't mean "me" but once it has flown from your fingers, it is too late to take back the scorn I have already felt when you weren't aware I was listening.

I can't tell you how many times I have sat invisible in a room while people used my own personal characteristics as an insult - without knowing they were doing it. Virtually none of them would have done so had I been wearing a label (gay, rape survivor, etc.). I know that because I make it a point of having a conversation with many of them after the fact. I'm also sure you've been in a room when someone said something derrogatory about race, gender, medical conditions, then realized someone in that category was there, turned, and said, "But of course I didn't mean you." It happens all the time - and the speaker did mean me - or they wouldn't have tried to take it back when they realized their foot was in their mouth.

If you wouldn't say it when you know I'm there, you shouldn't be saying it at all.

But like every other hot topic on DU, they will pass with time.

While it's a hot topic, I'm prepared to cut a bit of slack. I know the comments are not directed at people suffering gastro-intestinal illness. I believe there is no cruelty intended EXCEPT to the ego of Donald J Trump.

How glorious would it be if, despite his treachery, his alliances with facists, his attempt to undermine American democracy, he was brought down by a very basic physical complaint - the inability to control his bowel movements.

As I write, I'm battling nausea, headaches, diarrhea and fatigue - side effects of an immuno-suppresant medication. As supposedly educated adults, our job is to parse these comments to decide if they are an insensitive, broadbrush comment denigrating all people experiencing the same condition....or...

Are they celebrating, and I think reasonably, any affliction suffered by Donald Trump in return for the damage he has inflicted on America?

It's not always about cleanliness, because the b.o. smell follows them everywhere. It's on their clothes, even when their body is clean. It happens regularly and they aren't aware that they smell. As a matter of fact I've been to Germany on several occasions and I can tell you that many Germans don't use deodorant, despite the fact that cleanliness is important to them.

In Chump's case, the smell may be adult diapers that he doesn't bother to change often enough. Or maybe it's some other reason, I don't know. But he's apparently oblivious to the smell, and he's the only one.

This is someone who should not be chosen to lead our nation if his awareness level is that low.
It's ONE MORE SIGN that he needs to be permanently retired and out of the public eye.

They are about the biggest online bully in the history of the planet. Someone who spends every day and night insulting others. The problem with hall monitoring posts is, where does it end? Will the next request say to stop mocking his constant lying and narcissism? Or that we shouldn't mock his 91+ felony charges? After all, there are good narcissists and good people with indictments.

But I would encourage everyone to stay on task and focus. We are fighting for our lives here. Republicans attack us from every single angle and we have to try to do the same. The threads about trump are not about you, your family, or good people. They are about trump specifically. Save your pity for people who actually deserve it.

If everyone doing it out of meanness and being bullies, I would jump on your bandwagon.

I have not seen anyone joyfully acting like a bully over this. Instead, u think people are celebrating karma. The guy who is so superficial he would throw out a friend or spouse if they had an odor, is experiencing what he would ostracize others for.

One of my sons had problems when he was in grade school. He always had extra pants and underwear: it was hard for him. If people were being bullying about it, the way Drump always is, I would be the first to step up and tell everyone to knock it off. When it hits so close to home, it is sometimes hard to separate this stuff and not take it personally. Maybe I missed the horrible stuff but if I read anything of a bullying nature, I would have stepped up and asked what board I am on…check my post history, I have done it before. At least for me, this is about his narcissism and how karma is slapping him in the face with it.
